because my wife fried the fan to the laptop and now it keeps shutting down after 5 minutes of on time. Sooooo, the laptop will be a project of mine (time to get familiar with the innards of a laptop). Meanwhile, I will be assembling a new PC. I am giving her this one and making myself a new one. This is what I am definitely getting:
P4 Pentium 3.4 or up CPU
2gig ddr2 ram (what kind should I get)
Motherboard (again, what kind?)
500Watt PS.
geforce 6800GT (the one I was going to sell)
17-19" LCD monitor
Let me know about the motherboard and type of ram I should get. What are your picks and why? If you can, attach some links to the products so I can give them a once over. Thanks ahead of time. |

cubanlord...I will need some time with this one. I haven't been keeping up to the minute with mainboards and CPUs, as I'm not really in the market for one right now, and I am a graphics-loving guy more than CPUs.
I personally (off the top of my head from what I do know) is to go with the newer Intel Core Duo 2 or an AMD dual-core Athlon 64x2...maybe the Manchester core (socket 939) or the Windsor (socket AM2). Do some reading, but honestly, the Intel Dual Core Duo is looking pretty sharp.
Mainboards? I am an ASUS fan and always have been. Check that out after you choose your CPU.
RAM? Well, buying locally leaves little choice..I suppose Infineon or Kingston, though in a perfect world, Mushkin or Crucial from an overseas vendor would be preferable.
That's it for now. I will post back in this thread later tonight, after I can do a little reading.
Sorry to hear about your laptop mate...and contrary to what the last poster said in the other thread, it isn't a piece of cake, so be careful. If you are willing to consider it gone, then jump in. It may work out for you. |

hopefully I can learn something from this thread as I will be building a PC next year. I read that quad-cores are coming in January. Hopefully the prices won't be too prohibitive by late spring.

Yeah...I know it isn't an easy feat. Figure I might as well get some experience in it seeing that the laptop is fried. I'll be purchasing the components for the new PC around mid-August. I'll be looking into what I'll want to grab. |

To see what's available in Korea and for how much.
Actually, using Danawa and Newegg together will get you a little mad because almost all the Newegg prices are cheaper than any Yongsan dealer. Another "Korea is cheap" myth dispelled.
Anyway. My big upgrade two months ago went like this....
CPU...Intel 3.0 D 930..................200,000
Mobo....Asus P5LD2 deluxe..........150,000
RAM....1 GB of Samsung 5300.....120,000
GPU........nVidia 7900GT.............300,000
HDD......Seagate 250 GB............97,000
Monitor.......Viewsonic LCD VX2025wm widescreen.....400,000
PSU......Acbel 450W....60,000
Everything from Yongsan.
I used my old case and LG optical drives.
It was all put in and set up with Eng XP in my home by a very competent guy who wouldn't mind me giving his number to anyone who needs this kind of work done. PM if you want the number.
It added up to about 1,300,000 but I love the new monitor and the video card has really opened up a new level of gaming.

| alright. done. The laptop is now in a million pieces (yet still entact). I am taking the heat sink relay down to the local pc place here to see if they have it. If not, I'll have to look elsewhere. |

I can tell you that I went with a pentium D 940@ 3.2 gHz and an MSI motherboard with the 945pl and ICH7 chipsets. I added 1 gig of DDR2/533 SDRAM (frankly not sure of the flavor).
I have a PCI-E nVida 6200 video card that is adequate for my needs.
I went with a samsung 250gig ATA HDD for my primary and a cheap seagate 250gig ide for the extra (archive/backup) internal HDD.
I cheaped out with the LG DVD burner.
I have a generic 450watt PS.
For monitors I have 2 generic type LCDs that cost me 200k won each and they are OK. I do enjoy games but I am NOT a high end gamer.
I do some serious number crunching however and I find the Pentium D does a pretty good job and is a significant improvement over my previous P4 2.4 (by an order of magnitude).
Just my first hand experience. |

man....the following message is for those that are novices when it comes to computers...
DON'T LISTEN OR GO TO THESE TECHNO MARTS UNLESS YOU ARE KNOWLEDGABLE OR HAVE SOMEONE THAT IS KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE INQUIRING ABOUT. lol. 
I took apart the wife's laptop today and pulled out the busted piece. I went to the Techno mart around here today and asked if they had this in stock. Of course, they didn't. Conversing back and forth (with my broken ass Korean and their limited English abilities), I started to think...."do these guys know what they are talking about?". Just to make sure, I asked them a very simple question:
How much is a Geforce 7900GT and do you have one? Up-so-yo....Pisayo. Coronica....(something in Korean....shipping here....around 400,000Won by Saturday). These are the responses I got. Ok......can you order one? (again in my broken ass Korean).
Aniyo-----upsoyo. (But he just said it could be here by Saturday???  )Ah...so they don't have them here in Korea? Not over the internet? Majayo.
Ok.....let me borrow your PC for a second (gives me control of the PC). I then proceed to show him 2 different KOREAN sites where the 7900GT can be purchased for under 300,000WON. Their mouths dropped open (keep in mind that they had 7300's and 6600's on their shelves for a little under the 300,000WON range...lolololool ). Man...that just goes to show you that these people either:
A) really don't know about PC's and don't keep up with the latest trends
B) are only out to scam those that are ignorant when it comes to PC's
C) know about these sites but act stupid as if they have never seen these places before then order the said parts and make them up wayyyyyy above keystone(I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't employee this shady tactic).
Guys, seriously, for those that don't know about PC's: please be cautious when purchasing a PC or PC parts from someone.
Anyways, I now will order the part directly from HP for $36.  |

I just took apart the PC fan and the heat sink.
There was a GANG LOAD of dust and crap in there. No wonder why the fan wouldn't kick on. Hmmm....Now that puppy rotates as if it was brand new.
I'll be putting the laptop back together in a few days (have to go pick up the new teacher tomorrow). I'll let you guys know how the laptop project went and if that was the reason the laptop was overheating.... |

Yeah...I figured out that some of the dudes at Yonsan also don't really know a lot about what they sell. I went to buy an RDRAM setup a few years ago shortly after the 32 bit RDRAM was avaliable. The guy tried to sell me a board that only supports 16 bit saying "It's the same!"

yeah. I'll save the $1,000 that I was going to spend on the PC for another time. I'm just glad I got the experience of opening up a laptop and seeing how everything is set up. In all honesty, that video was a tremendous help. Now, It's really easy (IMO) to fix it if something else goes wrong. Just goes to show you that changing out parts isn't always the best solution. |
