i got a the motorola?
why?
three reasons
it was one of the smallest phones. i don't want a huge phone in my pocket and the megapixel phones are quite large. most of the anycall phones seemed fairly large. the clerk said that koreans liked to look at the pictures on the larger screens.
i liked the looks of it far more than most of the other phones.
cost. it was fairly reasonalby priced. about 370,000. with the charger, which i had to buy. I was pretty unimpressed about that.
i've heard that cyons are quite bad and my old phone was one and i didn't want to go back to that company. i've also hear that lg isn't that good. |

| So? Does the Motorola have an English menu option? How go the first few days of testing? |

the motorola does have english menues and is very simple to use. the first time i used it it had bad reception and i was thinking oh sh*t i have to return before i even leave the store. but every time i have used it since then the reception has been fine.
the camera isn't all that great, but then i got the camera just for amusement so i'm not to worried about that. overall i am quite happy with it. ONe thing i wish though is that i would like it to have the traditional ring tone. I find most of the ring tones very annoying. |

Is it possible to buy ringtones now in Korea? I'm back in America and just got signed up with Cingular. Polyphonic versions of Metallica's music to actors saying "pick up your phone" can be had for about two dollars.
If they offer ringtones for sale, what are they like? |

the mention of a cell phone used to make me somber, but now that i'm one of the blessed with a shiny new cellie, i feel the need to boast...err i mean, share my good fortune.
it cost about 380,000 (paid in monthly installments with no interest-~50,000/mo --includes usage fees)
english menu ( some parts are in konglish), digital cam, video cam, pretty colors and sounds. |

| Koreans say Samsung is the best. Get the one with the megapixel camera/camcorder if you want to take photos. A lot of phones are on sale this month, but there seems to be a shortage of the megapixel phone. I am trying to buy one. It is only for SK now , but is supposed to be available for KTF by the end of the month. |
Those Samsung phones are EXPENSIVE. Like 500,000 won for the best one with the June option.
I always buy Samsung Anycall. Never had any problems. I am on my 3rd Samsung Anycall phone since I've been here. My wife is on her 2nd. So together we have had 5 that have been well worth it.
They seem to last a long long time too. My last phone lasted me 3+ years. I only replaced it cause I dropped it one too many times |

| What is the best way about getting a phone? Should I buy one here and if so what kind do I need to purchase (GSM, quadband...) or is it more economical to wait and buy a phone when I get to my school? |

DON'T buy a phone in your home country. Most countries use SIMS cards and Korea (for the most part) doesn't, so you'll be sh*t out of luck. Wait until you get here. Some schools (few and far between, but still!) provide phones for their teachers.
I think that when you look for a phone, you need to think about what's important to you. I HATE phones with tiny buttons...the bigger the better! Do you want a cam or not? Most phones these days have English menus, but BE SURE before you buy it! Find out about the plan. Will you be sending more text messages or calling more? Do they have "free weekend" minutes?
I have a contract phone, not a card phone, so someone with a card phone might have some other tips.
I've had 4 phones since I've been here: 3 Cyon with LG, and now an Ever phone with KTF. KTF's prices are SOOOOOOO much lower than LG's!! BUT I think it depends on your plan and how much you use your phone. |

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency....
I recently hosted a Korean student studying in the USA for one month. He lives in Seoul. I asked him about getting a cell phone. (I will be arriving for an SMOE job in August).
He said that ONLY students (high school, and younger) can get a monthly plan. Another weird thing is that he doesn't have a prepaid plan, but a "post-paid" plan. He buys 500 SMS/month, but then pays for his talk time at the end of the month, after he's used it.
Does that jive with anyone else? |

Just so you know SK Telecom has the LG Cyon SD910 http://cellular.qj.net/LG-s-SD-910-Cyon-a-cool-new-sort-of-slide-phone/pg/49/aid/11756 for really cheap on sale right now. We just bought two of them brand new for 180,000 each. That seemed like a good price to me, considering old used phones sell for 50-100,000won in Itaewon.
edit: Also, we got on a family plan of sorts (post pay) for 22,000/mo with unlimited text and calls between us, and 20won/min and 30won/text otherwise. Good deal I think. |
