It's true - you can't be sure if information immi is telling you is really correct. It's a terrible system.

Regards whether you could be sued for breaking contract before it has started, for as long as you are in the US, it is highly unlikely the company would try anything. It would be too expensive for them. However, I would say be honest with your school, and if you want to back out, tell them as soon as possible. It may be that they are actually an honest school which will be genuinely stranded without a replacement teacher.

Even if you are in Korea, it's also highly unlikely that any legal action would be taken. There'd have to be SIGNIFICANT financial loss of the part of the school for them to financially justify going through legal proceedings. In many instances, they may try to bluff, though, and claim they will sue you to heaven almighty. Unlikely.

Yes, and know that it is very, very expensive to take someone to court here. Very expensive. As another poster said, they would have had to have lost a significant amount of money to justify taking someone to court. It is all bluster on their part...

The Immigration answer says you can cancel your visa application and that you need a new visa. What it fails to mention is that to do this you will need a letter of release.

In studies of the IRS in the US, IRS employees answer tax questions incorrectly more than 50% of the time. You can be sure that Immigration answers are just as unreliable.

Well, I got the inside scoop from a few teachers currently there. I wanted to speak with some teachers "free of the overseeing eye," so I tracked them down myself. It turns out, I was misled by the recruiter to believe it was dormitory living. I've had two separate teachers verify it's an efficiency apartment. This I can live with.

This frustration was further compounded by the "last-minuteness." They've had my paperwork since the beginning of June. I received an issuance number a week before I am to depart -- despite my constant nagging.

All is well now, and I will soon be joining the ranks of you other suckers. Smile
