| Yeah, like a previous poster said, you have to adapt to them. I used to try and avoid contact. Now, I welcome it. A couple of weeks ago, this little Korean kept coming...straight for me. Saw me but just kept coming expecting me to get out of the way. Now, I outweigh this guy by at least 35-40 kg...but he keeps coming. I lower my should, like an NFL strong safety and BAM...nail him and I keep walking. Meanwhile, he gave out a startled little whimper....just act like they would act... |

I think it is a sign of low self estime.
Just like the fact that a 90 pound Korean wearing socks can make much more noise and make the area shake more than a 200 pound Westerner wearing cowboy boots . It's all about, "Hey, look at me, I need your attention.

Its amazing that whenever I get back into Korea, I want to leave it again. Last time it was being ripped off by a taxi driver and yelled at with some blah blah blah and 'meegook' and a thumbs down!
This time, its the whole bumping thing. I dont think Ill ever get over it. So, I just got off the plane from a 12 day vacation in Thailand (and nobodoy bumps in Bangkok!) and Ive been in Korea a whole 30 minutes.. waiting for my suitcase when... BUMP.. by some fat Korean woman.. I glare at her like what on earth was THAT for lady! Im working on 2 hours sleep here..... She just walks like no big deal then... BUMP about a minute later.. I look around, plenty of room to walk without bumping right into me! errrrrrrrrrrrr........ some guy with his trolly and bags.... i glare at him too but he sticks his nose up like hes all that and a bag of rice... and then another BUMP.. on the way back from the same man. I got bumped again but some young chick too. All in a span of like 10 minutes.
Now heres what I think:
A. They want me to yell at them.
B. They want me to punch them.
C. They are freakin THAT blind to public courtesy.
I can be socailly retarded sometimes and a bit passive, but any hints on what to say to someone the next time they do this would be great. I really hate it and I dont think its too much trouble to walk around me if there is plenty of room to do so. Its just the look in their faces like they have the RIGHT to do it?!? I really sometimes think its racist! (not all Koreans are racist, but some are just like some Americans are)
I know excuse me: shill-yea-hamnida... but should I say something like, hey buddy watch it!... or what? I cant just stand idle anymore. Its pissing me off.
Thanx Other than that........ gosh I need to get out more. I only know one person irl from this board. |

Haha!!
Man I was on the subway yesterday coming from Kangnam, as crowded and packed as a subway car can possibly get, and in comes this really, really old guy. Man, he put a shoulder down and rammed right through everyone to get to the old person seats. That was so awesome. I wanted to give him a high five. Can't wait til I'm old and can get away with that stuff. I'm gonna go to McDonald's, order a coffee, and sit there for 7 hours getting free refills and complaining about everything. |
Does that include your parents? |

Perhaps P.E.I.Guy has better, more inside info about the construction clan from Morell, P.E.I. who threw me out of the hotel for complaining about Yankee bashing from the McDonald who manned the Front Desk back on the night before I was to enrol at the University of Toronto in late Summer of 1994.

Let's see.. he saw you, you saw him. He expected you to move, you expected him to move. So you smacked him like it was a football game?
What an assh*le for real.

I wish people like you would leave Korea. Just... go away, moron. |

Just look down at the ground. they will adjust.
Just walk slow. It throughs them for a loop, because only old people walk slow. They will move to avoid dealing with something slow. It's like the idiots who zig zag down the escalator, like they have somewhere important to go. |

people have hillarious ways of dealing with this stuff... I still think the 'you touched my butt!' is so awesome.. I dare to use it sometime. I sometimes act like I think they are getting in my backpack or something.. guilt trip? If old ajumma ladies run into me though, i just hold my ground.... adaptation is best... I almost enjoy plowing into people when walking down the subway sidewalks now.. though, I found myself running into people in Bangkok and getting some really funky looks.
humor is the best way to deal with things... it seems quite elusive sometimes though... ty all for sharing your humorous stories! great
JINJU: for such beautiful pictures you sure seem to have a rotten attitude. |

| To be honest you just have to assume their ways to some extent, play their game. Push off the subway, push to that available seat, don't move out the way if you don't feel like it. A little sad, because then they think everyone in the world acts this way. But at least you don't feel walked over. |

Agreed. Why be so precious about your 'personal' space? It's a lot better than having to apologise for getting close to someone else...Oooh I nearly touched you!! I'm SO sorry. I'm starting to think the Koreans have the superior approach on this issue; it means you can walk a straight line from where you are to what you want. |

| I seldom have a Korean bump into me. I think it's because I'm big (198 cm and 120kg) and they realize that if they bump into me they are probably going to get knocked off stride and perhaps even get hurt. It's happened a couple of times unfortunately to much smaller people including a guy on a bike who ended up with a nasty cut and a bent rim but was even more apologetic to me than I was to him. I dunno, just a thought but if that's the reason then it does mean that they are aware of this bumping thing but choose people to avoid. |

I'd walk a big circle around you and tip my hat, "How do you do, sir?". You have like 20 cm and 20 KG on me. |
