3. It was not a ransom. It was a fine for illegal fishing. |

Korea OKs Somali Pirate Ransom Demand
The government announced on July 30 that a deal was settled on July 29 and procedures were underway to release the 25 crewmembers that were held captive for 117 days aboard a Dongwon fisheries vessel, Dongwon No.628.... The AP reported that Somali militia commanders said, "The Dongwon's crew will be released as a ransom of $800,000 was paid."

S. Korean fishing boat and crew released from Somalia: ministry
South Korea's Foreign Ministry confirmed Monday that eight South Korean seamen kidnapped by pirates in Somalia in April have been released and are on their way home.... The release came after the boat's South Korean owner reached an agreement, which reportedly included a large ransom, with the captors on Saturday. The company head acknowledged paying a ransom, but refused to reveal the amount, saying it could set a bad precedent for other bandits. Sources privy to the deal said earlier that about US$800,000 in ransom was paid for the crew's release.

pay the ransom. Get the fisherman. Send in some special ops afterwards and kill the pirates. |

I'd only pay if the pirates could prove a real need for the eye patches and peg legs. Otherwise, no dice. Never negotiate with a two-legged pirate. |

True. And don't forget the expenses of obtaining and caring for a monkey/parrot. Then there's the cabin boy. And of course we must take into consideration the need to compensate the pirate for the pain of being unable to find a job due to the beard. Ship repairs, plank replacements, pirate language courses, keeping up with modern pirate ship flag designs...it's a tough world out there for today's Blackbeard. |

We now know Dongwon's price per employee...$32,000 per head.
Somali pirates need to hire a better lawyer to do their negotiating. But all other pirates now know who will pay ransom. Wonder how long before the next Dongwon ship gets hijacked. |

What on earth were they doing in Somali waters anyway? In the UK the foreign office has issued warnings not to enter Somali waters due to pirating. Didn't the Korean 외무부 not do the same?

What Korea needs is ninjas. They're the natural enemy of pirates.
I should know, I work for some pirates. |

Apparently they were not in a turtle ship. If they were in a turtle ship, this would have never happened.
See. Pirate-proof. Just ask the Japanese. |
