I'm heading over in a month to work at a public middle school in Gunpo or Kunpo. It's on line line, and I think it's a safe bet that it's at the station called gunpo.

Anyone know anything about the area?

See Sanbon; hopefully you'll be close to there and if so then you'll enjoy it. I lived there for over a year.

Small city, big people! 작은 도시 큰 시민!

You don't know exactly where your apartment is going to be, do you? Gunpo Station's not as fun even though it's not very far. Tell them you want to live around Sanbon if you have a choice.

Oh, and most hanging out is done in Anyang.

As mithridates pointed out, it depends what part of Gunpo you're in, but I think it's a great place to live. It's big enough to have just about everything you need. There is plenty to do. It's not as crowded as Seoul, but Seoul is easily accessible if you need that fix. Find out what part of Gunpo you'll be in. It covers a wide area, and some parts are nicer than others.

Here's a photo I took of the area a few weeks ago:

Yeah, a nice little quiet tucked away place, and it's funny we look at that photo of high-density skyscrapers and can say that.

Yeah, I've thought the same thing. The first time I went up Surisan and got a bird's eye view of the area, I was really surprised. I hadn't realized from the ground that it really was that big and crowded/crowded-looking.

Is the Seoul subway system easily accessible from Anyang? I hope so...but the recruiter I was speaking with about a public school position gave me the impression that it wasn't. When I asked if it was, he said, "Oh no, you just get on the bus and sit. You'll be to Seoul very quickly." He must think I'm a hillbilly or something (Midwestern) and can't handle the subway. Oh yeah, and how far is Anyang from Sanbon? I posted on this thread thinking they are in close proximity.

About 15 minutes away. Super close. A cab from Sanbon to Anyang is under 5000 won.

There are a couple subway stops in Anyang, so it's easily accessible, but once you figure out the bus system, you might find that to be a lot more convenient. Depending on where in Seoul I'm going, I frequently prefer the bus to the subway. Also keep in mind that Anyang is quite large, so not all parts of it are right next to the subway stations.

As mithridates said, very close. It takes about 10 minutes by bus, 15 by subway.
