I think the reason why this question pops up regularly is because the answers all seems to be the same and not really specific. For example :

Quote:
The neighborhood I was in, Gyeyang-gu, North Incheon was pretty convenient with easy access to both the subway and Samhwa Express buses going to Incheon. There was also a Walmart and a Carrefour there

Is that Gyeyang station? Newbies like myself aren't really sure what Gyeyang-gu is, which I'm assuming is a suburb.

Quote:
I live near Inha and it is not a bad neighbourhood.

What's Inha? I too am interested in visiting Carrefour, and up to this point I'm still not sure where it is in Incheon (was it Bucheon? Songdae?).

I posted questions about where Burger King was and I still don't know.

Anyway rant over, I'm going to be based in Bupyeong (which is one of the major spots in Incheon) and its filled to the brim with quality restaurants, pubs and shops.
The shopping mall situated on top of the station isn't what I call a real mall, but its a start to perhaps one of the biggest underground market I've seen to date. Mind you most of the shops are for the ladies as its mostly clothes. There is a food court at the base of the shopping mall where you can find food ranging from 1000-8000won. You can also find 2 or 3 Sushi bars there as well which was a nice surprise. On the same floor, there is a 1000won shop - handy!

The major foodspots in Bupyeong that most people here would be familiar with :

- 2 McDonalds
- 1 KFC
- 1 Lotteria
- 1 Starbuck
- 1 Outback Steak
- 1 Baskin Robbins
- 2 Pizza Huts

Then you have your numerous Korean/Chinese and some Japanese restaurants. To find it, you will have to go to the underground market and exit anywhere on the right hand side.

Incheon itself wasn't quite the tourist spot that I had hoped it to be. You will have your usual chinese gate when you exit out of Incheon station. Beyond the gate however, it is just one restaurant after another serving pretty much the same sort of stuff. I couldn't find one yumcha/timsum place there unfortunately (which was what I was looking for).

There is one interesting looking building that showcases chinese history and artifacts. This building is on the right of the huge chinese gate facing you in case you want to see it (there would be 2 golden dragon sitting outside the building so you can't miss it).

I went to simil (spelling?) market. Nothing that I haven't seen before. I guess it would be handy for anyone actually living in the area. You'll get your chinese kimchi varieties, a russian looking restaurant, and a couple of interesting looking fried chicken stalls.

Incheon port was ugly. I didn't feel like walking along it to find a nice spot for photos so I headed back and finished my tour of the "city". Overall, I wasn't all that impressed with Chinatown. Seen better, had better food (heck even the small one near my place was as good if not better and cheaper). It looked more ghost town than Gong-xi-fat-chai town, but then maybe because it was a sunday.

My advice for anyone in Seoul and pretty much anywhere in Korea, don't come to Incheon for chinese food. Go to Jackie Chan's or Lee Chows or the one near your place.

Meanwhile I'm still touring Incheon (only been here a week). I'll be heading for the island once my gf comes back.

Carrefour is at the Arts Center subway stop on Incheon Line 1. There is also a Shinsegae and Lotte (spelling?) department store within a few blocks of that stop.

Bupyeong is a good area in terms of access to services. I'm a bit farther out then that, between Juan Station and Arts Center Station.

Sometimes giving directions is tricky, especially if you haven't living here for very long.

OK, fair enough. You might not know that a gu is one of the larger districts of a city. From largest to smallest it goes shi (city), gu, dong. Gyeyang-gu is a section of Northern Incheon, the nearest subway stations to where I lived there are Gyesan and Imhak stations. As far as I know, Gyeyang subway station is still under construction. It's about a 15-minute subway ride from Bupyeong.

In addition to what I mentioned earlier, some of the amenities include a nice 300 meter mountain with trails, a rare (for Korea) outdoor swimming pool, some nice farm areas to go biking in (including an ostrich farm!), and a good sized but very Korean nightlife district with lots of good Korean restaurants, watering holes of every variety, and one of the largest nightclubs in Korea (Arabian Nights) nestled comfortably in a maze of love motels and massage parlors. On a Friday night you can often find other waygook teachers hanging out at Number 10 or the OB Lounge (these are bars, nothing sleazy here). It also features one of the shortest possible airport bus trips to Incheon Airport.

Gyeyang-gu is on the edge of the burgeoning metropolis. It's chock full of those filing cabinets of humanity they call apartment buildings, and it has a decent amount of modern convenience, but you don't have to go very far or look very hard to get a little bit of rural Korea. I found it to be an interesting place to spend a year.

BTW, OP, you mentioned that you're going to "the island". I'm not sure which one you mean, but there are dozens of islands off the coast of Incheon worth exploring, nice beaches, good seafood, mountain hikes, and drunk college kids shooting firecrackers on the beach. Most of the islands can be reached from Yeonan Pier, which is a 15 minute cab ride from Dongincheon Station, but there are also nice islands you can get to from the airport. For more info, do a search on Yellow Sea Islands. Be sure to check them out while it's still summer.

I'm not too far from Bupyeong station myself, and really like the area. I bought a bike recently and have been cycling around some of the hills which is always good - cycled out to the Munhak stadium too (40 minute ride taking in the central park area, but if I was keen it would have been a lot quicker).

I've got quite a few parks near me which is great, though annoyingly they're set to concrete over a nice grass football pitch to build an arts centre soon. I'd rather they kept it as a football pitch (looks nice and is fun to use) but the arts centre and planned new subway stop in the vicinity will increase our apartment value so the missus is happy about that, at least.

Thanks for the linx, Dave. I posted about an hour before an interview with the school...English Village (from what I understand, a new branch). I looked at all these threads, nobody seems REAL thrilled to be living there.

Dave, what's your take on the city?

Cut to the chase and tell us the address of English Village, that way we can help you without listening to stories about Wal Mart and getting motion sickness by using Google Earth.

Inha....is Inha University. And one of the Carrefour's is directly across from Inha. Inha is in Nam-gu, if that helps.

And there is a Burger King in the food court at Shinsaegae Department Store. As far as I know there is just one Shinsaegae but if there are two, this is the one across from Kim's Club near the Lotte Department Store.

The nearest station is Juan...and the 511 bus will take you to the back gate of Inha. Carrefour is across from the front gate so you would have to cross the campus. Not sure if there is a bus from Juan to the front gate of Inha.

I'm not sure if Scott is talking about the same one I'm thinking of, which is just down the street from Carrefour and Lotte Department Store.

There are several electronic stores in the area. If you go west from the intersection where the Arts Center (toward VIPS) and go to the next major intersection there is a sign that says, "Welcome to Incheon".

If I recall there's a Hi-Mart on one side and another store on the other side. I don't know how expensive they are, but I hope that helps.
