I don't know anything about their religion but I do know the region was a much more peaceful place when it was run by the Ottomans.

The west made a terrible , terrible mistake when it broke up the Ottoman empire.

It didn't have a choice. WWI changed everything. But up until then, for a hundred years, the Franco-British policy was to prop up the Ottomans.

Glyphs, gardens, towers, temples, pyramids, and old school (or rather old Testament) battles - cool.
Lacking fanatics and modern weaponry - even cooler.
Getting a chick to tell you erotic stories for 1001 nights- priceless.

I kinda have a soft spot for the post-colonial nationalist era, circa late 50s early 60s. Like, back when they had that new country whatever it was called, I dunno, it consisted of Egypt and Syria I think. United Arab Republic? I think Syria left after a year or so, and Egypt kept the name for a couple of years more. Or vice versa.

I actually own some Baath party literature. Got them at a library book sale, for 50 cents each or something like that.

Ah yes, you pine for the days of Nasser and the golden age of Arab nationalism... Wink

Anything by Michel Aflaq? If his vision of Ba'ath had ever come to pass the Middle East would be a very different (and better) place today.

Persia wasn't pagan way back when--they were Zoroastrian.

They were way cooler pre-Islam. Anyone remember temple prostitutes? Enforced prostitution before marriage? (I'm less into infant sacrifice and self-castration, but to each his own.) Even the Parthenon is supposed to be a copy of a Persian temple.

Yes, both books are basically commentary on Michel Aflaq, with long passages quoted from Aflaq's books.

Unfortunately, Aflaq ended up as the house clown for the Iraqi regime, which propogated the false story that he had converted to Islam before his death. In 1993, the Americans compounded the indignity by levelling his tomb to the ground.

I'm for the pre-youknowhat era, too.

But they really had something going during that whole that whole Peace Corps-fez-nehrujacket-Johnny Quest 50's and 60's era.

I gotta say that.

You really think so?

I wouldn't want to be just another fez in the crowd.

But he is kinda cool.

I'll give it some thought.

Thanks for the input.
