How many Koreans know about Guniess Beer, Ireland's #1 exported good?
How many Koreans know about Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Guns 'n Roses...?
How many Koreans know who Mike Myers or Edward Norton is?
How many Koreans know about Fish & Chips?
I've talked to some Koreans and they don't know about some of the above things. I'm a little surprised. |

They're probably a little surprised by how little the outside world knows about them too. |

You`re surprised? Sounds a little naive. People know about things they either need to know about or things they come into direct contact with, nothing more. The average person doesn`t seek out unknown elements of culture from around the world just off thier own steam for the purpose of being a well rounded person... |

Of course they are. But it's a little bit different. Despite the 'Korean Wave' , Korean culture has hardly made a dent in the rest of the world, whereas Western culture (and 'The West' encompasses a lot of different cultures) is a different story altogether. |

They generally think they know a lot more than they do. Same as most people I suppose. |

Knowing about different kinds of beer is hardly evidence of a cultured person.
Perhaps the OP says more about what YOU don't know than what it says about Koreans. |

You might hear several misconceptions about the U.S. (in my case) from Koreans in one day, but then you will start talking to someone who is reading Noam Chomsky.
It's just like anywhere...there are people that are interested in learning about other countries and people that prefer to just concentrate on the world immediately surrounding them. That's their choice and they shouldn't be faulted for it. However, if they express an interest in learning about where you are from it is probably not advisable to show your shock at how little they know. Living in Korea is often an exercise in patience because you have to explain things again and again, but it's not called the most homogeneous nation in the world for nothing.
Your average Korean might not know much about Guiness, but OB or Hite makes a stout so somebody obviously does. By the way, has anyone ever tried it--I'd like to sometime. |

I saw middle-aged looking guys requesting Guns'n'Roses in a bar. I couldn't believe my eyes, or should I say my ears? Even I hate them. I'd rather hear some of the latest Korean singers. The same bar also plays Right Said Fred songs. hehehe They also play John Lennon. |

I tried the Hite stout, it is not fantastic, but try it and see if it fits your taste, it has a lot less "Character" then the european version. |

Hite Stout, not bad. Several bars here in Anyang have it on tap, 3000cc for 11,000. |
