I will presume there is such a thing as Korean rock, punk and metal bands first of all. I believe I had seen at least a couple of them on TV during a World Cup pep rally.

Anyone know the names of some of these bands? To relate to my students I sometimes talk about Korean pop culture, in the same way that young kids at home love to talk about Spongebob and so on (actually they love that here too, don't they). Girl students love chatting about Super Junior and Li Joon Ki, SHin Hwa, Bada (V.I.P), Kim Jong Guk but what about bands that appeal to the male students in class? Often times I can just see them roll their eyes.

SO, know any Korean rock/punk/metal bands?

Here ya go.

CDs are a lot cheaper if you buy them at shows.

A fair amount of these bands don't have official releases you'd find on Mr Kwang.

Crying Nut is the best of the punk-turned-popular bands, although I still prefer their old stuff.

jaganth69, if you have a hankering for the old punk sound, you can do better than Yellow Puffer.

There is a huge show this Saturday at Ssamzie Space and Rolling Hall. Ssamzie is going to spotlight some of the top hardcore bands, such as 13 Steps, Vassline, and Samchung, and then everyone's supposed to head over to Rolling Hall for Rux. Just take a look at the front page of Skunk.

Mate, I would be there like flies to freshly laid dogturd but marriage, a masters degree, mad overtime and living in Cheongju conspire to keep me out of the capital. If there is any Jap Girl punk or Oi going down tho, let me know and I might make a trip up.

Wow, this thread might get back on track.

You're in Cheongju and you're complaining about coming up here? Don't even bother. Just keep an eye out for MF Crew shows. It's the second best place in the country for punk and hardcore (although at the moment mostly hardcore). It's got more bands than Busan and Daegu combined.

I see there's a show on August 13 at Roadking. Looks like a good one.

Vlack plot (from Seoul)
Low Blow (from Cheongju)
Shorty Cat (from Seoul)
Something Fierce (from Cheongju)
Suck Stuff (from Seoul)
13 Steps (from Cheongju)
Dextro Delta 9 (from Busan)
NAHU (from Cheongju)

If it's oi you want, there are plenty of bands playing it on a weekly basis. It just depends what's your fancy. The last couple weeks have been great with my friend Yeongsoon from Attacking Forces (another Cheongju band) visiting from the army and putting on some good shows. Captain Bootbois and Dirty Small Town still play regularly though.

If you do show up, be assured we will not be the only two "skinheads" around.

Man, I wish I could even get uptown to see shows these days, but the best I do is a plate of chicken feet and a few pitchers at the local hof. Still, there is a good scene here, you are right.

Too bad, Cheongju shows are a lot of fun. If Sunday is no good, the next Saturday on the 19th is a Team Dread show. They're a Canadian punk band located in Cheongju, currently the only all-foreigner punk band in the country.

I know of team dread, one of my workmates plays in another band uptown. 19th I am off to Vietnam, alas. Do you make it down here for many shows?

In my entire two and a half years in this country, I've only made it three times, and had a great time each trip. Or was it two times?
