In Germany... YES!
| Quote: |
| Fulham's German defender Moritz Volz is a massive fan of David Hasselhoff, describing the former Baywatch star as "like some higher spirit". He added: "In times of trouble I ask myself 'How would the Hoff deal with this situation?'" |

| In May 2006, Hasselhoff returned to the spotlight after he was mentioned in an interview of NBA star and native of Germany, the Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk was asked what he does to concentrate when shooting foul shots. Dirk replied that he sings "Looking for Freedom" to himself. Shortly thereafter, Hasselhoff attended the May 26, 2006 Mavericks home playoff game. |

King Sejong I actually had middle school students give that with a straight face a year ago. |
no different than an American expecting people in China or India to know of Elvis or Ali
(conflating one's country with the world, talking as if it's about the world, but actually is about one's own country, but not drawing that distinction, unaware that there's any real difference - happens often) |
No that is a little different because America extends it`s influence and thus it`s recognition far more penetratingly out into the world than does Korea. And both Ali and Elvis are far far far more well known outside America than Sejeong is outside Korea...[/quote]
Ya think? |

All of my students know who Michael Jackson is. They have no idea about his music (I think). He is just a freaky cultural icon that all cultures cannot turn their heads away from.
I think Korea is a good country to gauge this famous person test on. Since they absolutely abhore anything non-Korean, if they have heard of it, then it must transcend all cutural barriers.
Michael Jackson, Queen Elizabeth, I'd assume everyone knows them in Korea, so therefore, one can assume everyone in the world who has access to a TV will know them.
People without TV's don't count. |
