If that seems retarded to you how about that fella in baseball with a $200 million + contract? He gets a gadzillion $ even if he's on the injured list.
Think he's got a college degree?
Contrast that with someone who's spent the better part of their life doing important medical research and who wins a big, huge $20,000 award for a ground-breaking medical discovery that will help millions of people.
 |
He then patents his invention and cashes in on royalties for the rest of his life. |

that usually can never happens though. the patent usually belongs to the university or whatever research center he's working for (and if their receiving government funding the rights belong to the government). usually the patent will be bought (or stolen) from the government by a (corrupt, well-connected) drug company who make billions in profits and the inventor is usually srewed.
Good example would be the inventor of AZT, Jerome Horowitz, who because he was receiving NIH funding, did not have rights to the drug. Glaxo bought the rights from the government, made billions, while Prof. Horowitz never received a dime. |

I thought there was going to be a lot more to justify this statement in this thread - not just a couple of jobs ads. |

Not as many people are concerned with these things as they are with consumer product X that the phone center would be dealing with. There's your demand.[/quote]
There's your "Western society is messed up." That's the point of this thread. |

| But we do try to place value on things that can't be measured monetarily, such as education, public works, health care, libraries, galleries, museums, etc. We just do it very well. I have always thought teachers and nurses and cops and firefighters in the west are underpaid. The weird thing is you get a lot of conservatives trying to make out they are over paid. Teachers come in for this a lot, I don't know what the agenda is, but it seems that a well educated population should be our most valuable asset for so many reasons... |

Maybe it is the well educated people that want to keep all the others stupid
Everything is relative, but if you are on top you want to stay on top. |

Yeah but education is no guarantee of being on top, unless you have a business major or law or something. Teachers get crap because they "slack off" for 2 months during summer. I totally agree with Satori on this one. |
