It's the small cinema (also known as Film Forum or Seoul Art Cinema) in Insadong, situated on the fourth floor of the building that is dominated by musical instrument stores on the other floors, and that has a road running under (through) it.
It is a great little cinema, showing a diverse range of different films. Just recently I have seen SISTERS (Brian De Palma), PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (Peter Weir), three Eric Rohmer films (English subtitles included), two Jacques Tourneur films, a Samuel Fuller film....
Coming up in the next few weeks are THE WIZARD OF OZ, SINGING IN THE RAIN, BLUE VELVET, FREAKS, CARRIE, WEST SIDE STORY, WHITE DOG, THE HILLS HAVE EYES (original version), CASABLANCA, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE....
Generally they are the original prints (ie film, not DVD), and it is well run (SISTERS had to be shown on DVD because the print hadn't arrived in Korea by the showing time, and we all got a free ticket for our troubles). Not all of the foreign films will have English subtitles (depends on where they get the print from) however, but the presence of subtitles is always advertised. i
Its actually well attended by Koreans (and, shock, horror, many of them actually go there alone!), but I've only ever seen 2 other Westerners there in my whole time of patronage, so I thought I'd get the word out - encourage Seoul to expand its movie options!
Here's the website:
http://www.cinematheque.seoul.kr/
It's all in Korean of course, but just click on the picture on the left, and it will always take you to the current schedule/event, with the schedule at the bottom. |

| Thanks. It's good information. I knew about it vaguely, but forgot about it. It's good to get a reminder. Have a lot of good memories of shows at the Vancouver cinemateque. |

| I usually go by it when I take the purple line 5 Jongno samga (3) station exit 5 (or exit 4 which has an escalator, then turn 180 degrees and head back toward Insa dong. It's on the left as you go under the overpass, and it's almost across from the tall Fraser Suites building (which is a little further on the right.) It's a little before you get to Insa-dong street...I've often thought about impulsively buying a ticket for one of their films (including cult classics...) but the timing has never been right (too late or too early...) |

Thanks for the heads up.
By the way, do you have any recommendations for films playing there. |

I recommend going to see Blue Velvet. Along with most other David Lynch films. I'm sure someone will disagree as his films tend to polarise opinions, which is a good thing of course.
I'm crap at Korean, on the website does it say the films are shown ONLY on 8/14? Or does it mean something like for a week/fortnight starting from 8/14? And is it 24 hour non-stop showings? Sounds nice! Thanks for any help. |

Hannah and her Sisters is playing this aft. It's one of my favorite Woody Allen flicks. (I've seen it about 5 times.) If you like Allen, check it out. Very witty & philosophical. Here's the schedule:

It's a great place, indeed. I've seen some fine things there. I just wish I lived close enough to use it more regularly.
A tip: when you get there, they've always got some monthly schedules you can take, in Korean natch, but they say which movies get subtitles. |

I'm gonna go there on Sunday to see the Woody Allen flick. Can't wait.
Beforehand, I was thinking about going to the tea museum in Insadong. Maybe before that I'll get a manicure whilst I exchange witticisms and vignettes with my chaste mistress in a nearby salon. More scrumpets, please madamme! |

If that post were a pizza topping, it'd be a maraschino cherry.
