i don't have an ipod, but i think the files are mp4? if that's the case you should be able to google "mp4 converter" or something to find something free.

That's all the converters are... they convert into .mp4 but are marketed as iPod converters because that's what people will be searching for... what they usually do when they're marketed as iPod converters is set the default resolution to the one which fits the iPod screen perfectly...

I don't know... I always end up with poor results on my PC when converting, with the audio and video tracks running out of sync...

A couple of companies offering them as far as I can remember as Xilisoft and 3GP... there are a ton more, but those I can remember... if you want to get hold of one for free then www.soft-best.net will most likely have something

Check out:
isquint.org

This is a great file converter, especially for iPod. And it's free. No need to bother with Quicktime Pro. It even converts wmv files.

Slysoft, makers of the excellent AnyDVD software, also have a new product:

Depends on your platform. If you're on Windows try something like Ipod Video Converter. If on Mac OSX try something like handbrake (to rip from dvds) or isquint.

thanks for the info, but I had already found Jodix free Ipod video converter (won't convert AVI, most of the files are in AVI) and Videora but that one seems to have the wierdest error where I can't see the whole screen no matter what I do.
Instead, I've been downloading from iPodNova.net. They have some good stuff.
