Well, in a sense, there IS stability and peace in the North, if peace is defined simply as the abscence of war and stability as things being in an unchanging state.
However, assuming that Cheney meant something like "until the Kim Jong Il gang is out of power", then it's hard to square such remarks with the claim that the US will soon be announcing a withdrawl. |

the US has forces in Korea to prevent an arms race between Korean and Japan. to sort of prevent Korea from going nuclear. While Korea has enough troops , tanks and aircraft . IF the US leaves Korea would build up even more which would cause a reaction from Japan. Serious tension between Korea and Japan would have a bad effect on the US economy Another reason is saving face the US doesn't want to appear to back down to North Korea. Thhe last reason is interia, US forces don't redeploy to other nations so quickly . See Germany.
One thing US forces in Korea are NOT for is to contain with China. |

The US "out" of Korea by October? I suggest you quit smoking crack or lay off the soju. Maybe out of Yonsong by October, but not out of Korea. |

I have seen at least 1 documentary with US military soources saying push comes to shove, the US is not needed as much as the world believes.
None the less, this is not 1950, the SK military is not the underdog and watching how quickly public opinion here turns nasty and knowing from history how violent are family feuds.
I would not wager against SK in a fight. On top of that, Japan would not accept NK coming to take over Dokdo and unless China backed NK, its a done deal as it should have been in the 50's.
I don't live in Seoul so I have at least 48 hrs to make it to an evacuation point and take heart, we won't all die in the initial attack. Its always a percentage game |

Actually, most of ROK ground forces are quite good. It would not be September 1950 all over again. And although the Air Force and Navy are not of US or Japanese quality, they are far better then anything the North can muster. But don't look for the US to leave any time in near or even distant future. |

Joo, you are such an idiot! The only reason that the US is occupying Korea is to keep Japan feeling secure enough so they don't go Nuclear.

N. Korea building new missile bases, silos along east coast: Report
North Korea has been constructing new underground missile bases and silos along its east coast in recent years to deploy intermediate-range rockets targeting Japan and U.S. military facilities on the archipelago, a report said Thursday. "The new bases clustered along the east coastal line, in particular, are short- and medium-range missile bases aiming at Japan and U.S. military installations in Japan," said a report written by Yun Deok-min, a security expert at the state-funded Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security.

so let me get this straight:
The US is in both Japan and Korea to stop Japan from going nuclear? Being in one of them isn't enough, but both is?
And you call Joo the idiot... |

yeah, ROK foreign policy is either hopelessly naive or keeps its blinders on at all costs (perhaps a combo of both). |

Many posters consider that South Korea is capable of defending itself. Is this really true? Could you offer some support for this supposition? Further, is there a genuine will to resist and survive possible North Korean aggression and forced reunification within the South Korean polity?
(These are all actual questions I have. I'm not baiting) |

Highways.
Have you seen them? They run through mountains. You drop them at one end and how can they get through.
Parks.
The are designed for bunkers, trench lines etc.
Cities.
The first floor is almost always barricaded and the floors of apartments are designed for building fighting.
Look around you, the only way NK could win is extreme weaponary. Its a nation designed for war, I am amazed you can't see it.
The problem is lack of international escape routes. |

Well, remote viewing is a lot harder than they told me it would be, but my OSIR handlers tell me that if I concentrate a little harder, I might get the hang of it in a couple of weeks. My shaman, on the otherhand, spirit-walked to Seoul the other night, and he agrees with you about the infrastructure, but he still wants me to ask you whether the polity is ready. Well that's a loose translation of what he's asking, I'm not totally fluent in Chukchi yet! |
