IF only Canada had Bush's electonic voting machines, guys like Harper wouldn't have to worry in the least about "polls"
Conservatives "Shrug Off" Gloomy New Poll
Thu Aug 3, 3:05 PM
By David Ljunggren
CORNWALL, Ontario (Reuters) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper shrugged off a poll on Thursday that showed his minority Conservative government was losing support, saying he was sure people would keep backing his "right-wing" agenda.
The Decima poll of 1,000 Canadian voters -- released to the Canadian Press -- showed support for the Conservatives had fallen to 32 percent from 36 percent on July 27 amid increasing concerns about the government's pro-Israel stance.
The opposition Liberals -- without a permanent leader and in some disarray -- were up one point at 31 percent. The party lost to the Conservatives in the January 23 election.
"There are all sorts of opinion leaders and interest groups who have tried to block our agenda. But we know where we stand. We know where we are going," Harper told a meeting of party legislators in the eastern Ontario city of Cornwall.
"Canadians will choose to move forwards. We've achieved a lot in a short time. Our work is far from finished," he said.
Harper's fortunes started to slip in the middle of July after he said the Israeli assault on Lebanon was justified and measured. Although nine Canadians have been killed so far by Israeli attacks, Harper has yet to protest to Israel.
The Conservatives need to make big gains among voters in the heavily populated provinces of Ontario and Quebec to win a majority in the next election -- widely seen as taking place next year, though there has been some speculation Harper would call a snap vote later this year.
But the Decima poll showed the Conservatives lagged the Liberals by 33 percent to 42 percent in Ontario. In Quebec, which has a large and vocal Lebanese population, they were behind the Liberals for the first time since the election campaign.
Andre Pratte, chief editorial writer for Montreal's La Presse newspaper, wrote on Thursday that Harper was "a man of ice" and said his silence on the increasing death toll in the Middle East was intolerable. Harper indirectly mentioned the crisis once in his speech on Thursday.
Other recent polls show Canadians are also unhappy with the country's military mission in Afghanistan, where four soldiers from Canada were killed on Thursday.
Asked whether he was worried about the effect on public opinion, Defense Minister Gordon O'Connor told reporters: "No, I'm not really. I think the public understands we're in Afghanistan to help the Afghanis."
Despite the Conservatives' woes, an imminent election looks unlikely. The Liberals are in the middle of a leadership campaign, and are unlikely to want to bring the government down, and the Conservatives will want to stay away from the ballot boxes while poll numbers are this low.
The Decima poll, taken July 27-31, is considered accurate to within 3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. |

Which will all change with one terrorist event. Canadians have been living in a bubble for too long and it is going to pop soon.
How can we stay neutral on terrorism? |

CSIS seems to be doing a good job on keeping terrorism from occurring:

As they should be, they are concentrating on keeping an eye on things at home, and supporting the mission that had a direct relation to 9/11, but not being distracted by less important / irrelevant missions. |

There is a lot to be said for a trusted friend shouldering their fair share of the burden. |
Butch and Sundance both went out looking for trouble and dealt with it when it came......the USA is more like the schoolyard bully who goes over and kicks over some sandcastles and then tells Canada to come over and kick some sandcastles over too...Canada being too smart and polite for such stupidity refuses...which makes USA very angry that its best buddy doesnt want to kick sandcastles over too.

When 1 civilized country (Israel) is at war with a Militia of Thugs who is operating under the control of no recognized nation, Canada should get off its candy ass and take a side. |
Our Prime minister did come down soundly in support of Isreal....do you know what you are saying when you write it>?

Is this anything new? Canadians sat around the last half of the Cold War waiting for their appointment with their socialized doctor while the US footed the bill for their defense while criticizing us for coming into the world wars late. |
Again.....the USA told Canada that the kid in the other neighborhood was a bully and was gonna take over his hood....that they had to stand together against this evil Russian ....then followed 40 years of USA and USSR strutting about like roosters at a c0ckfight....both knowing they would kick each other ass and both too chicken to go slug it out.....meanwhile USA kept going hey Canada can you tell us if that pesky USSR guy comes over.....we want to string tin cans all along your border so if he tries to sneak in we'll know....Canada went along with it because it didnt want its good friend to feel left out. Of course USA was pretty peeved when Canada still played with Cuba after the USA told them that Cuba was part of the evil USSR club and when USA ran over to kill little yellow people in Vietnam..Canada said they didnt want to play.....when USA went to Iraq to kill little brown men Canada said again they didnt want to play....when USA went to Afghanistan Canada went with them....why? Because some nasty people from Afghanistan threw some rocks at USA's house and did some serious damage.
Canada doesnt jump at USAs beck and call.....but when shyte happens...Canadas got the US's back! |

Its pretty simple IGTG.;..when Lebanon returns the Israeli soldiers AND starts to police its own country instead of letting Hezbollah run around doing whatever it wants...there is no point in a ceasefire....all that does is give the terrorists more time to make more rockets! |
