I am trying to find out who 지영 was.
This is how the Hanguide program translates the encyclopedia article.
I hope somebody out there can do a little better than that:

.............................................

지영 (智永): 중국 수대 (隋代)의 서예가.
Jiyeong (智永) : Calligraphist of China maniple (隋代) .

Wow, that is one crappy machine translation. Very Happy

The standard Pinyin representation of the name (sans tone markings) is Zhi Yong. He was a calligrapher of the Sui Dynasty. He was a seventh-generation descendant of Wang Zhiyi, if that means anything to you. (It means nothing to me).

A convenient way to find the romanizations of Chinese characters is http://en.wiktionary.org ... just enter them individually into the search box and press "Go."

Here's my *rough* translation. Hope it's somewhat helpful. There's some technical calligraphy terminology that I don't have a clue about -- also the pronunciation of the 해 character may be incorrect.

---

지영 (智永): 중국 수대 (隋代)의 서예가.
Zhi Yong: Calligrapher of the Chinese Sui Dynasty.

왕희지 (王羲之)의 7대손으로 희지의 제5자 휘지 (徽之)의 자손이다.
He was the seventh-generation descendant of Wang Zhiyi, in the line of Wang's fifth son, Huizhi.

형 혜흔 (惠欣)과 함께 불문(佛門)에 들어가 저장성의 왕희지의 분묘 가까이에 있는
영흔사 (永欣寺)에서 살았다.

He became a Buddhist monk together with his elder brother Huixin, and lived at Yongxin Temple near the grave of Wang Zhiyi in Zhezhiang province.

선조의 유업을 계승할 일념으로 서예에 정진하여 영흔사에서 희지의 서체를 공부한 지 30 년 만에 해 (楷), 초 (草)를 병서(竝書)한 "진초천자문 (眞草千字文)"
800여 권을 각 지방의 여러 절에 기중하었다 한다.

Absorbed with the idea of finishing his ancestor's work, Zhi Yong devoted himself to calligraphy. After studying the calligraphic forms of Wang Zhiyi at Yongxin Temple for 30 years, he presented some 800 volumes of the Zhencao Thousand Character Classic, in which the kai (?) and cao were written as a single character (?, 竝書), to various temples in each region.

이것은 왕희지 서법의 전형 (典型)을 후세에 전하기 위해서였다,
그 밖의 작품에 여청제첩 (여청제첩)의 "귀전부 (歸田賦)"가 있다.

This was to convey the exemplary calligraphic form of Wang Zhiyi to coming ages.

Aside from this, Zhi Yong's Gui Tian Fu (fu of retiring to the countryside) from the Yu Qing Zhai Tie also survives.

----

By the way, did you retype this? There are several odd errors (when compared to the Naver version, for instance) which make translation even hairier than it would otherwise be.[/url]
