Has anybody finish the MA in Applied Linguistics through University of New England, in Australia. Any comments on the program would be appreciated.

I had a co-worker from New Zealand that finished that course recently. He seemed very pleased with their program. It also got him a job at a good university in Seoul. I applied to the program and got accepted but I decided to go with Birmingham because it was better known and it seemed to have a high reputation for quality.

Go with Birmingham. My verdict on that one and online degrees in general is still out, but don't go with UNE. Their international department is full of idiots. The degree itself might be half decent, but the people I know there had problem after problem with their international office (as of last year).

Seems like Birmingham has a lot of positive reviews and is the way to go for a distance Masters. Just curious about any Americans who have done the program and how they found it? Also, Applied Linguistics or TESOL?

I am an American and I am currently in the program. So far, so good. I went home to California a few months ago and I asked my local community college if they would hire me to teach ESL classes if I had this degree. They told me that my degree from University of Birmingham would make me eligible for consideration.

Does anyone know how much U of Bham is willing to budge on its GPA requirements?

Also, does anyone know what the current cost for this program would be as of 2006?

Assuming this link is correct:
http://www.bham.ac.uk/postgrad_prospectus.asp?section=10000002000100080003

Then, the amount would be 9000 UK Pounds for a 12 month block for International students. Does this sound right?

If so, that would be one Hell of an increase from a previous poster's reply of "6 payments of 2.2 million won" in 2001. Of course, HapKi may have went as a UK or EU domestic student in which the tuition seems to be much lower by almost a dividend of 3.

http://www.bham.ac.uk/postgrad_prospectus.asp?section=1000000200010004

Someone PLEASE tell me I had a brain fart, and that these numbers are wrong.

Dear Opoyg-
The links you provided are for on-campus students.

The Distance Learning program for the University of Birmingham MA in TESL/TEFL have their own website, which is here-
http://www.cels.bham.ac.uk/prospectus/ODL/odlteflinfo.htm
You can search around there and have many of your questions answered.

Concerning current cost, they don't post that on the site, and they request you ask the local administration center, which is at Kyungwon University in Seoul, which is here-
[email protected]

Like I said before, when I did the program, total tuition was 13 million won. I'm curious if this has gone up, as the program has gained popularity.

Thanks for setting me straight, HapKi. I must have navigated myself into the wrong area from a previous link.

Phowshhh!!!

I had been thinking about the Birmingham MA for a while. Ignorant of the cost, I just decided to look up posts for it here, and wow, 13 million Won for the course!!! Choke!

Do you think it is going to be financially rewarding in the longterm to get this MA?

I don't have any particular job aspirations in mind at the moment. I had just been thinking of doing the MA to update my qualifications.

Are all MA TESOL courses similar cost?

What do you think of someone who has only had a basic TESOL cert for their entire teaching career?

if you'd like to be well paid as an ESLer outside of Korea and Japan (and Taiwan), then take the DELTA, even by partial distance, or Trinity's diploma entirely by distance, and at some future time you could apply to work at top institutes elsewhere.

Even Thailand has $2000 u.s. jobs for ESLers at the top institutes. Of course, with so much teacher supply, you need a DELTA or equivalent to even have a chance.

And a Cambridge or Trinity diploma helps you develop your SKILLS more than a Master's degree, in the majority of cases, from everything I've ever heard.

Burt if you wanna work in Korea or Japan looooooongterm, then get a Master's. They are way more respected hereabouts, in the area of the world notorious for having the POOREST ESL students.

Thanks for your input, VanIslander. I nearly took the DELTA course back home last year, but my course was cancelled due to lack of enrollments. I'm hesitant to take any distance DELTA, though, and I'm also wondering about what others have to say about the DELTA/MA tradeoff. I have looked at a wide cross section of jobs across Asia, and it seems the only times I have seen a demand for DELTA teachers is for Director of Studies positions in the large language chain schools.

I also wondered about another issue regarding the Birmingham MA. What if you started the MA with an adults teaching position, but then switched to a kids teaching position half way through the course. Does it matter whether you are teaching adults or kids during the course period? Also, what if you switched to working outside of Korea half way through? My job position in Korea is quite insecure at the moment. We don't know from year to year if another contract will be on offer or not for the following year.

You are mailed a handbook for each of the 6 modules in the course. The handbook contains the books needed for the module, weekly reading assignments for the uninitiated, summaries of said readings written by Birmingham staff, and, at the back, a list of 12 or so assignment questions. These questions focus on either one of the two courses in the module, and the reading you have done should go directly into answering the question. Some are theoretical, while others are more practical (ie- qualitative research done on your teaching environment.).

To answer your question, the fact that you have a readily available group of students to do research on (tape lessons, give questionaires, analyze student responses, etc..) will give you more options when deciding on a question to write on. Adult or children students should not make a difference, as long as you define them in your paper. To answer your other question, Kyungwon University is the admin. center for Korea. If you were to move out of Korea, I'm sure you could get a "now what?" response from them. You could always move to Birmingham and finish up the last year on campus. Laughing

Thought I would drag this thread back from the dead to update people about Birmingham's distance learning MA.
Over the last couple of years it has been increasing in price but the course itself is not being improved. The university are less than helpful and many of the tutors are condescending. I am finishing it soon but wish I had spent my money and time somewhere else.
Hope this helps people looking for an online course.

Do you happen to know what the approximate, total costs are now for a non-EU person? I'm from the US.
