There's a Korean t.v. commercial on now that has the famous song sung by a Korean woman, only, she has trouble with her r/l.

Not one of my students, I'll tell you that.

The director's wife thinks I do too much pronunciation exercises. She doesn't understand how many words are misunderstood by that one little slippage, which she herself muddles most times too.

Other doosies in Korean media? Does it matter?

Not Korea and not recently, but I once heard a lovely rendition in a piano bar of "Moon Liver."

Oh come on!! Calm down - it's a joke. I have no problem with Koreans laughing at me when I speak to them in Korean, in fact they do so to my face. Lighten up. Smile

Being an excellent mimic, if I cared enough to learn Korean, I'd pass for native on the phone. And if I weren't an excellent mimic, I'd get over it, like maybe you should get over people laughing at the human condition.

The host at Open Mike at the Big Electric Cat boasts that he can sing the chorus to John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Road" in Korean. Sorry I don't have Hangul on this computer.

Yeah because learning Korean is such a waste of time, since you live in Korea and everything.

I'll be gone in a year, two at most, so beyond the half dozen polite phrases, and since my inherent interest in the country/culture is middling, and since I have a rich inner life that occupies me fully, yeah, it would be a waste of time to learn a language I could in no way become fluent in during my time here and for which I'll have no use someday before too long. Thanks for asking.

I've never been in a noraebang that didn't have (take me home) "Country Load" in the playlist.

Actually, you know, I think this is very good point. Turns out, compared to ther Asian languges, Korean is pretty easy to read to not very easy to pronounce correctly ...

Myself, after a a long time here, I'm still a little nervous I might mispronounce a word that later turns out to be a very rude one, just due to one wrong phoneme ... maybe we all should be that nervous.

I heard that commercial and did a double-take. Since I've only seen it once, I thought I was imagining that she said "fry". Apparently not..
