It takes all kinds. Really. He's an atrocious, one-note, smug, self-involved actor, and his direction is bland and totally artless.

But whatever gets you going.

You may have a point, but I just loved Braveheart when I saw it, and on repeated viewings. Never analyzed why, just liked it. I never found him to be smug, self-involved in that movie, and my mark, and many's mark of a good movie, is does it take you into that world for a couple of hours. It did for me, and many others, so I think he did something right.

Watch WHAT WOMEN WANT. I dare you.

Gibson needs to portray a few flawed characters soon. His movie ego is becoming almost as big as Costner's. Hero role after hero role..........I prefer Crowe because he has a much wider range than Gibson. Gibson has two characters......the hero (Braveheart) and the wacky hero (Lethal Weapon)

Braveheart was an entertaining flick....as was Gladiator....but I'm basing this call on actors because both movies were just entertaining pulp.

Hey, just what I needed: a pretentious cinephile telling me what is and isn't good in filmdom!

Go you.

The Romans were not known for breaking ranks and charging head long into the enemy with their legionaires. It would have completely negated the advantages given to them by their weapons, armor, shield, and tactics. By remaining in formation they would have remained better protected by presence of numbers and mass of the formation. This would allow them to drive the barbarians back and with the gladius short swords use under hand thrusts to cut the guts out of their opponents. Worse they did not even show the legionaires with their pilums, or lances, that was one of their greatest weapons. The same the lance that prodded christ on the cross was hurled enmasse at the enemy in a huge volley prior to physically engaging the enemy.

In short the movie makers wanted to make the scene more dramatic so they added in all sorts of stupid things that left me annoyed as it paid very little tribute to the fighting prowess of the Roman military machine.

Gibson played a pretty flawed character in Conspiracy.

Its pretentious to not like Mel Gibson now? Who lowered the bar this time?

Edit: You telling everyone he is a great actor and director is, well, the same as me saying he isn't. Only more wrong.

Tough call cuz these are the only two movies I've watched over a dozen times. I'll have to go with Braveheart.

(can't believe someone like King Arthur)

The "kill bad guys with your sword to take revenge on an evil empire" kind of theme is a great one for a movie though. Almost never fails.

I wonder what he would think of his great X 24 times grandson's ass-grabber avatar? Shocked Laughing Embarassed Wink Idea

I'm hoping he'd be really, really, really proud of that image in my sig (note the guy's exercising restraint and thought ahead very well. Good for him!).

cool...I took a class in ancient greek warfare so I was interested. It seems like the Romans took the Greek phalanx and made some major improvements and adjustments

It's got to be Braveheart on so many levels, and for so many reasons.

Braveheart actually had some emotion and tension. After wifey was killed I WANTED that English Captain's head to be taken off. (Bloody English). In Gladiator I was told that Maximumus Whodi Whatsius was upset, but some sound effect screams and galloping horses was never enough to convince me.

Braveheart actually made sense with characters being consistent all the way through. In Gladiator scenes were haphazard with people roaming around not sure of what they were supposed to be doing in the story.

And what was up with the villain in Gladiolas?? What he's tortured and unloved? We're not supposed to feel sorry for the villain!!! Did you feel pity for Darth Vader? Did you think Iago was misunderstood? F*ck no!! Kill the bad guy, hate him, be a little bit scared, but KILL HIM NOW, QUICK!! At least Braveheart's English King, and idiot son are the kind of villains you love to hate you cheer when it's death by sword time.

I have, and Lethal Weapon of course. But I was talking about Braveheart. I see your point, but I think each movie and performance should stand on it's own. I mean, DeNiro did some shyte but I'm not going to hold it against his great performances.
