Anyway, all that matters is who you boted por on erection day.
silly joke
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sadly, I have some students with more than a year of hagwon English experience unable to say the letters 'V' or 'F' correctly.
It's berry unportunate (sorry, couldn't help myself there)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the Korean English teachers often asks me to pronounce words, usually quite simple words, so she can see how my mouth moves when I say them. The other day, she asked me to say "ring," and then wondered how I could pronounce it so easily. I don't know, maybe just a few years of practice helped? |

I just exaggerate my tongue, Gene Simmons style, to show the L, and say no tongue, and do an Elvis upper-lip to show the R. They can easily see the difference at that point, and repeat ad nauseum for X number of years, and hopefully they learn it. We have no Korean teachers at our school, so the kids don't get the wrong pronunciations. |

Being an excellent mimic, if I cared enough to learn Korean, I'd pass for native on the phone. And if I weren't an excellent mimic, I'd get over it, like maybe you should get over people laughing at the human condition. |
Yeah because learning Korean is such a waste of time, since you live in Korea and everything. |
Hey, what about that Dr Hwang! Ain't he a scream and a half?
Good ol' whacky Korea!!! |

I'll be gone in a year, two at most, so beyond the half dozen polite phrases, and since my inherent interest in the country/culture is middling, and since I have a rich inner life that occupies me fully, yeah, it would be a waste of time to learn a language I could in no way become fluent in during my time here and for which I'll have no use someday before too long. Thanks for asking. |
You make me proud |

| Let me point out in no uncertain terms that the average Korean person's pronunciation of English is about one hundred times better than the average Japanese person's pronunciation of English. Boy it's really freaky bad over here. |

Yeah I had a student called "Rola" once. It took a little while to figure that one out. |

Were they aiming for "Laura"?
When you've got all sorts of weird made-up "English" names like PINKL and JELL Deli, etc., nothing sounds dumb or unlikely anymore. There was a company a few doors down from us who asked my help with an English-language fax they were sending. The company had recently changed its name, but had no new letterhead, no new sign up yet. I asked the secretary for the exact new name.
Her: It's "Grarber Engineering & Design".
Me: It's what?
Her: "Crowrber"?
Me: "Crowbar"?
Her: Yes!! That's it!
Me: No, that can't be it. "Crowbar Engineering & Design"? No way.
Her: "Grober.... Crowber...."?
Me: Sorry, I'm just not getting it. Could you write it for me?
Her: (writes the name in hangul)
Me: Huh... Looks like "Grover" (I write "GROVER" in English), but that can't...
Her: YESSS!!! "Grover"! I know it's "Grover"!
Me: Really? Why "Grover"? Who's Grover? Anyway, we got it.
So I rewrite her fax letter, then she's got some other correspondence that I help with. All faxes & letters go out "Grover Engineering & Design". This went on for half a year, I'd translate or rewrite their English correspondence. Then one day I happened to look closely at their sign on the wall in the lobby, which had Hangul in big letters and English below it in very smaller letters: "Global Engineering & Design". Oh shit! GLOBAL! |

Seems some people are assuming the vocalist is Korean.
To me the song sounds exactly the same as the version
used over the end credits to the great Japanese anime 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'
Seems like the vocalist is more likely Japanese than Korean

There are no greater language butchers than English. We mangle with the best of them. Just look at Paris for example. Koreans get it right and we don't.
However that being said, it's still funny to hear Koreans mangle our language too. Especially since Korean is such a b*tch to pronounce, at least for me. Maybe that's why I appreciate Japanese so much. Seems so much easier. Just got to learn more Kanji and I'll be much better. Anyone know a good place to learn Japanese in Seoul geared for foreigners?
Oh and when I was in Okinawa on my vacation the English spoken there was generally excellent. Very few problems, especially since they seemed to understand my Japanese anyway. |

Hee hee. Favourite student names given by Korean teachers that I can remember.
Bred (Which he insisted was pronounced Brad). All the Koreans called him 빵.
Rolly (Who was a little fat anyway so I thought this was cruel)
Milhouse (Hee hee)
Jinny (For a boy)
That's all I can think of for now. |
