My documents were received by the school on Thursday, and I am trying to decide how far out to purchase my plane ticket. I want to make sure to give enough time to receive my passport w/ visa back from the Korean consulate in Chicago, which must be mailed in and mailed back. What have you typically experienced for turn-around times on getting the notification #, and then for the back-and-forth from consulate if you had to mail?

It depends on the district/ Immigration Office in South Korea.

On receipt of all documents from the candidate, the school will apply for the Visa Issuance number - depending on the Immigration Office, this takes 3 - 10 working days (Seoul)(Uijeongbu: 3 - 5 days). The school will then inform you of the VI number for you to contact the Consulate and apply for the Visa (E-2?).

Consulates take 2 working days to prepare the Visa. You will then be able to collect it or they will mail it back to you.

It's "peak season" (July/ August); Immigration is over-worked (Seoul) ...
Best is to contact the school. Why are you purchasing the ticket?

This isn't entirely true. I just got mine in Vancouver last month and it was 5 business days. Check with the consulate but don't count on it being done in two days.

Call a travel agent and explain the situation then ask about refundable tickets. My travel agent has already pushed back my flight after a clueless BEEP at my school opened the sealed transcripts I sent, requiring me to send additional ones. To be safe, you could plan to arrive two days before you must be there. Then, at least you have that little time to adjust. I wanted to get there a week early, ha! Dummy me.

I just went through this myself and got my visa # 4 days ago. Just because you've sent your papers into the school, it does not mean they will be putting in paperwork right away. It took them over 2 weeks to just hand in my application to a Korean Immigration office, after many phone calls from me chasing their tails. I gave Immigration a week and a half before I had a Korean friend call the Immigration office to check on the status of my application and it turns out they had already sent back the results (though I had not heard anything from the school). So, I immediately called the school and they gave me my number right away. Who knows how long they would have waited to give me my number?

Yesterday, I express mailed my visa application to Chicago through USPS, which came to be a total of $28.80 since I used express mail for the letter there and the self addressed stamped envelop back ($14.40 each). Plus, don't forget to head to your bank for a money order ($45) since they don't take personal checks. According to the Korean Consulate page, it says to expect 3-5 business days for them to process and send the passport back to you. I would guesstimate to say that at the very quickest, you will get this all done in less than 3 weeks. But.... who really knows. I was pretty anxious with all the waiting, so I have feeling that had I waited any longer to make those phone calls, it would have taken even longer for all of this to have happened. I felt pretty safe after I got my visa # to book my plane ticket (just last night) and quit my job =).

Sorry for the long winded answer, I hope it helps!

San Francisco K-consulate processes in a day or less! Of course, that's for a walk-in.

Thanks for all the good information. I am expecting to hear from the school tomorrow regarding whether they have submitted the documents and their best guess on when processing will be complete. The teacher I am replacing is finishing the end of next week, so I am hoping they will keep everything moving to get me there as soon as possible. I really don't think I would have gone through with all this if I hadn't had all the help from responses to posts and past strings. Thanks, everybody.

You bet.

Just remember, as long as you do your part in a timely fashion, it's not your problem if you have to arrive late because they can't get it in gear. Heh, heh, I keep telling myself that anyway.
