JongnoGuro & Cubanlord,
There isn't a pane of glass. But the long white/grey strip at the right of the photo is a thick wooden partition--probably positioned there so that my neighbour and I can't break into each other's apartments....very effective for that but lousy for the air flow in the closet.
By the way, I'm a "she" ......but I've been called worse things than "dude." Thanks again for your help.
(Had another "crisis" in the last hour--dumped some vegetables in the toilet. Didn't think they'd cause a problem but I was wrong. Does anyone know how to say "toilet plunger" in Korean. It's been that kind of week!) |

When was the last time the filter got cleaned?
That could reduce airflow and cause it to be less than effective.
Might seem like a no brainer but I've met so many people who forgot to check regularly. |

The efficency of your a/c depends on how well the outside unit can pump out the air. Airflow through the closet is critical. That and a good cleaning inside and out to help the airflow. Start with the outside. Get rid of any dust you can reach, use a bit of water if you need to. A clean fan and coils outside are important but I don't think it's an easy job in your case.
Pull of the cover off your wall mounted unit and clean the filters well.
Then all you need is an airflow through the closet. Make sure air can get in as well as out. I'd just open the door and blow your room fan into it until you get a better solution. |

| Is this really how they install A/C in Korea? That's insane. |

An update:
First thanks to Bulsajo and OneWayTraffic.......And Demophobe, "Dudette" works for me.
Got one of the guys from the property management group to clean the filters on the wall unit--judging by the mess he made in my shower, the filters were pretty dirty. Just cleaning the filters and opening the vents has dropped the temperature to 23 degrees but it feels a lot cooler. (I think I slept through most of my science classes...but if I remember correctly, hot air rises so the temperature near floor level might be lower than that.
Unfortunately, I think I would have to enlist Spiderman to climb the side of my building to clean the filters and coils in the unit in the closet. From what I can see, things look pretty dusty in there but there's no way I can get at anything. A really dumb set-up, as you've all pointed out.
In any case, things are better now because of your input (thanks again Cuban lord and JongnoGuro) and now that the closet door is much cooler inside and outside, I will try keeping the door open with a fan blowing and see how much difference that makes. |

Which "vents" are you talking about? Do you mean the louvered windows in the closet that open to the outside? The ones that are faintly visible (and shut) in your photo, but are clearly visible (and wide open) in cubanlord's photo? If so, then I'm surprised your nextdoor neighbour hasn't been compaining as well, as that would affect him/her, too.
Anyway, terrific news. 23 degrees = Heaven! |

Yes, I am talking about the louvered window vents that open to the outside.
I'm pretty sure that there's no one living in the apartment next to me.
Now that the closet is cooler, I can tell that the other condensing unit isn't on (prior to getting the temperature down, even the outside of the closet door was so hot that I was reluctant to open it). And I never hear a sound coming from that direction. |
