|

Friend's notebook HD failed and unfortunately despite trying several attempts to access it, it seemed like it is gone or requires a reformat. I suggested a reformat but she's got invaluable photos and stuff on it and so she's really wants to retrieve them if possible.
Can anyone advice on data recovery on 2.5" HDs and where we can find such a shop in Incheon or Seoul area. I've never experienced going to one in my life, is it expensive? |

there's a place on the 1st floor (not the floor you come in on if you come from Space 9, across the tunnel thing, that's the 3rd floor) of the building in Yongsan, the blue building right across the tracks from the train station and Space 9. It's called Myoung Repair or some such, i think they specialize in data recovery. got my laptop repaired there, was a reasonable price. |

Do you know if it's a hardware failure or data corruption?
There are a couple of things you could try before reformatting or paying a pro:
[hardware failure]Try putting it in a freezer for a few hours. Seriously. I read that this can sometimes 'unstick' a head from a platter. And I've read that this can buy you enough time to remove your crucial data before the HD craps out for good. This is worth a shot for a mechanical failure. Data recovery off of a HD that has physically failed is expensive, that's why knowledgeable people are always saying "back up your data". Sometimes this lesson is only learned the hard way, and it can be painful.

edit: The day after, I shoved the hard drive back in the freezer for 24 hours. After getting it out, I was able to get 20 more minutes of life out it. |

[data corruption] Replace the HD and reinstall the OS and instead of tossing out the old HD put it into an external housing. The laptop may not boot from the HD anymore, but that doesn't neccessarily mean that files can't read (and more importantly copied) off of the drive.
Or try some other ideas:

Korea might be different but data recovery can be very, very expensive in North America. In the thousands of dollars. I think it's a pretty time intensive process. |
