I've been here a couple years, and last week a light went on in my head about those bumps on sidewalks and in subway tunnels. They're for the blind! They warn people about upcoming intersections and lead to bathrooms. Big "aha" moment.

But I still don't understand what the hell an "etiquette" bell in the toilet is. I've never pressed it, but is someone really going to come running and bring me some toilet paper? Or do I press if I see a lack of etiquette? Spitting in the bathroom! BEEP. Banging on my stall door repeatedly. BEEP! Any ideas?

So if you have an idea about the "etiquette bell" then go ahead and share.
I'd also love if someone wrote a similar sentence, like "After all this time, I finally realized ___________, but I still don't understand ______________."

I believe someone presses the etiquette bell so that others around you can't hear you doing your business. If you feel you are going to be particularly... loud, or you are just shy, you hit the etiquette bell so that it will kind of camouflage your sounds.
I've never used it personally, but that is what I'm told it is for.

So much for the ejector-seat theory.

I've never seen these etiquette bells. Where are you guys finding them? By the sounds of it, though, I'd say Ms. Manners comes running in when you press the button and starts into an on-the-spot etiquette lesson.

"Ms. Manners recommends that you light a match, sir."

yeah those bells, chimes whatever in the bathroom are to mask the sounds of farting, peeing and whatever else you do whilst on the toilet

isnt that a bit too obvious though? might as well just do the courtesy flush instead

I'm going way off topic, but your post just reminded me of a pretty funny, if screwed up, video of Japanese toilet pranks...

A bit obvious? The going-into-a-stall-in-a-washroom-and-closing-the-door thing is a bit obvious too. Next time I'm going to hang a sign on the door that just says "Reading Room" and play a tape at max-volume of pages being turned. Wink

Have Asian women taken potty etiquette to a whole new level unknown to their Western counterparts? It seems they have. I suppose a woman can "courtesy flush" anywhere flush toilets exist. But this "tinkle bell" thing, will it transcend continents and cultures? How long before that becomes a standard feature of the finer women's public potties in the West? Seriously, do you see it catching on there? Why or why not?
