For those interested in the Muslim/anti-Muslim debates going on on this board and elsewhere, you might be interested in viewing this movie I found on Google video.

Obsession: What the War on Terror is Really About

The movie is 1hr and 17min long

I'm only at 15 min, and that's by watching 4-5 min at a time... but yes, looks to be a very interesting and worthwhile watch so far, thanks for posting the link.

On the one hand, it's definitely got some disturbing elements, especially the little kids reciting poems about their dreams to become suicide bombers. It's educational to see the source material first-hand, however cherry-picked it may be. On the other, it was more than a little disingenuous to start with a little disclaimer about how the radical Islamists represent only a fraction of the Muslim population, and then pound into the viewer's head "Muslims hate America/Israel and want to kill them" for the next hour and fifteen minutes, followed by a token 30 seconds of "...except for moderate Muslims. We love moderate Muslims *hugs*." Also, they kept saying, "We need to do something about it," without ever saying what that "something" was. I was really feeling the "dot dot dot" after that sentence. What exactly are the filmmakers or interviewees proposing that we the viewers do, other than be aware?

Good post.
I finished it last night, and was left with similarly conflicted feelings after watching it. I hope more people here will watch it and comment. I'd like to read some reviews of it, it'd be great to hear what Al Jazeera, for example, has to say about it.

And even though it was cherry picked, I found the feeds from Arab and Iranian tv sources very interesting. Couldn't help but notice the Nasrallah and Lebanese clips, given the present situation...

That is what I took away from the film. The whole thrust, as I saw it, was the first step to do anything is to first recognize the problem. To discuss a cure is useless unless you first understand the disease. I saw the film as attempting to shed some light on what the disease actually was, in all its repugnant glory. I, for one, was glad they didn't fall into the trap of providing the usual overly simplistic, ill-informed tripe about what should be done to stop what is going on.

I was impressed that they, as short as it was, included clips from Arab TV of moderate Muslims condemning the radicals/fundamentalists (sp?). We are usually treated to some rep from CAIR giving a lukewarm form-letter type sound bite of "We condemn terrorism against innocent people" after an attack. I always notice how CAIR and other fence sitters never identify who they consider "innocent." Anyways, the movie provided me an opportunity to see a Muslim talking to a Muslim news organization on Arab TV criticizing the radicals.

As far as cherry-picking goes, I agree but, what current events "issue" type program doesn't? I have seen many, many, many other MSM programs on both sides of any issue do the same thing. If you noticed the reactions to the 9/11 attacks in the film, they showed the Palestinians jumping for joy at news of the WTC attack, while then cutting to show a clip of a protest against the attacks in Tehran by Iranians. They showed Iranians marching and shouting "Death to terrorists" in downtown Tehran immediately after the attacks. If they were truly trying to give only a one-sided or narrow view of Muslims, why did they show the Iranian protesters?

When they showed clips from "sermons" inside mosques in Gaza and elsewhere, I made it a point to look closely at the crowd sitting there listening. On more than one occasion I noticed a couple of men in the crowd, usually older, hanging their heads down with a look on their face that seemed to say "Damn, won't this guy shut up!"

The truly disgusting thing for me were the clips showing the indoctrination of the children. I agree with one commentator that said the children were having their childhood stolen from them. Truly sad. I was also disturbed by the Jewish "drama" that appeared on some Arab TV channel. Can you imagine that show being shown on U.S. or Canadian TV!

Anyways, I'll probably end up watching it again.

Take care.

I personnaly believe this movie should be aired on Canadian television. Its about time the apthetic country of ours wakes the *beep* up.

I am a right winger mainly because I was born and raised in a communist country. I've seen the extreme utopias people have thought off. I personaly will take a bad day in democratic system then a wonderful day in communist/islamic/fascist system.

I also am firm believer that all religions are inherintly evil because we the human race invented them. I truly believe that we are an inherintly an evil race.

I support the US they did the right thing in afghanistan but not sure about iraq because Saddam was so efficient and snuffing out *******. They should have been allies if anything.

The movie was excelent now that we know what the root of the cause is we need to treat it. Problem is that you just can't tell any one apart in the ME. I think the west has to stop *beep* footing around the issue say *** the media, don't let them come in forbid soldiers from taking any kind of pictures and do the deed.

Islam is a cancer, and how do we treat cancer? Massive amounts of radition and chemo.

Mod edit: Please watch the language!
