Mine was 'The Greatest Hits of 1985'. It included such classics as:
De Barge - Rhythm of the night
Opus - Live is life
Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas?
Nik Kershaw - I won't let the sun go down on me
Philyss(sic?) Nelson - Move closer
Dead or Alive - You spin me round (like a record baby)
I recieved it for Christmas in1985, in conjunction with my first walkman |

The first one that I myself bought for me, as opposed to gifts I've received (like Saturday Night Fever), was, on eight track:

Albums... ha! DJs use 'em to spin some funky beats these days but they are certainly relics of the past.
First Album: Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977) Soundtrack
First Cassette: Men At Work - Business As Usual (1982)
First CD: Shakira - Pies Dezcalos |

Firesign Theater's I Think We're All Bozos on this Bus (1971). Other favorites of mine were Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (being a trumpet player myself, I always enjoyed their style) and Styx Grand Illusion. Back in the '70s, I had plenty of 8-tracks (Styx, Chicago, Eagles, ELO, Boston, etc.). |

I think the first album I ever owned was The Mini-Pops "We're the Mini-Pops". It was a birthday gift. Albums were becoming pretty obsolete at this point. It was all about the tapes. The first tape I ever purchased was Madonna's "Like A Virgin". Then of course as we all grew I purchased my first CD which was U2's "Rattle and Hum". I was re-doing my music collection at this point.
With the mp3 player taking over I think the more relevant question is what was the last hard copy of a CD you bought. I'll start.
Jamiroquai's "Dynamite" |

My Dad used to buy tons of awful stuff in bargain bins. They were my first influences!!!
James Last
John Denver
Jean Michel Jarre (Oxygen)
Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass.
The first record I actually bought myself would have maybe been The Jam. All Mod Cons.
