"Last week, Windows columnist Paul Thurrott ripped into Microsoft for ignoring CSS standards with its upcoming Internet Explorer 7.0. "Microsoft has set back Web development by an immeasurable amount of time. My advice is simple: Boycott IE. It's a cancer on the Web that must be stopped. IE isn't secure and isn't standards-compliant, which makes it unworkable both for end users and Web content creators." With the redesign of my own site last month, I discovered just how non-compliant IE is with basic CSS: IE 52% vs. Firefox 93%. Is Microsoft purely incompetent and tone-deaf to customers or simply counting on IE's non-compliance remaining a de-facto standard?"

... you know, I think it must have been this time last year that I posted another M$ watchers boycott of IE6 for the exact same reason. Of course back then someone came on to say how hard M$ were working to implement css standards and how soon they'd fall in to line.

Now here we are one year later with IE7 and the exact same problem. Hmm ... I wonder who that could have been exactly ? Possibly someone from Gwangju ...

As we all know, a silent standard war is going on, and because IE has still a strong following, they can ignore the needs to "adapt" themselves.

Well it's not a war exactly. The standards are set by W3C, they can't make anyone follow them (unfortunately). But I think that it seriously amounts to abuse of your marketplace position when you come out with a browser at this late stage in the game that is only 53% compliant with the standards.

M$ have some of the most talented software engineers on the planet. They could make their browser standards compliant in a week if they'd wanted. But instead now, every webdev is going to have to go back over every site they've done and touch it back up for IE7 for free. That's an awful waste of time that could be put to better use. Not to talk even about the time it took to get everything to work with IE5 and IE6 in the first place.

I'm having a BAD MICROSOFT day today...

A friend was pissed today because he could no longer input necessary student information on his university's website after upgrading to IE 7.

He uninstalled it.

I tried it just long enough to fall in love with tabbed browsing, but after encountering so many problems, I uninstalled it, and started using Firefox because I heard it had tabbed browsing, and worked better.

Thanks for introducing me to Firefox, Microsoft!

Actually, that article is from a year ago, so that sounds about right.

Did I stick up for them? Maybe I did. But they said they were going to fix many css bugs in ie7, which they have. It's just a real shame that they are only fixing bugs and not moving forward.

The reason they aren't making ie7 compliant, according to them, is because of backwards compatibility. They don't want you to have to go back and fix every website for free, and ie7 is close enough to ie6 so that you won't have to.

Sounds like a lame excuse, but there is some truth to it. Think about it. 99% of Korean websites would break if ie7 was standards compliant. No one would buy Vista.

I say all this as a Firefox user, advocate, and contributor. I've done plenty of free work for Firefox, and I will continue to do so.

But as a professional webdev, I have to be realistic. Most people use ie. So I will continue to code for both for a while longer. That's what I get paid to do.
