So I have an old laptop that I want to get rid of. It's running Win2k with one of those activation/authentication stickers on the bottom with the activation key to the Win2K disc that might have come with it.

The thing at this stage is probably full of spy-ware and all that kinda crap. So I basically want to reinstall the OS from scratch. It has to be win2K, cause it won't handle XP too well. Also, I'd like to be able to use the product activation key to get an authentic version of Win2K.

I know back home a computer shop would be able to reinstall the OS based on the authentication sticker. I know that in Korea though, they're likely to just install a pirate copy of windows.

Is there anywhere I can go to get another copy of windows that'll work with my authentication key ? I guess microsoft don't offer any kind of service in this regard ?

Thanks

Good Evening:

If you have the original recovery disk for your laptop, simply re-install it. The activation key is specific to the OS version you have on your laptop. In short, no, your activation key won't work with another OS.

dbee...any code you get from a Korean vendor or online will probably be a pirate one. What about writing MS? Just a thought...yeah, right.

You can download the CD and as well all of the service packs for 2000. Try doing some reading about getting around any security that may come with the service packs.

... yeah, I don't have the originals I'm afraid. I got the laptop secondhand a good while back and haven't been using it much since. I think that they should have a contingency for cases such as this though IMO ... ah well.

... yes, I figured as much ... I don't reckon it would do me much good Sad

hmm ... how do you mean download exactly ? I'm getting vista off torrent at the moment for my gf's computer. She's sick of linux ... surprise, surprise. I can't blame her though, all of her favorite Korean websites won't work with it.

<warning M$ rant> ... I just don't understand, that if I want to buy a computer, I have to pay for windows whether I'm going to use it or not. Plus if I have a computer with an activation/authentication key, I still have to fork out the cash for a whole new OS, just because I don't have the disk. Then if I want my OS to be clean of adware and stuff, I have to fork out an extra $60 for windows 'genuine advantage'. No wonder Bill Gates is the richest man on Earth.
<M$ rant over>

JOKE anyone ?

Have you heard that when you play the Microsoft vista installation cd backwards you can hear the cries of the devil on it ?
... and even worse - when you play it forward it installs Vista ... Smile

Sorry, I'm in a ranting mood at the moment. Yes Linux can be a frustrating piece of crap at times also ... Wink

If Microsoft made toasters ...

Everytime you bought a loaf of bread, you would have to buy a toaster. You wouldn't have to take the toaster, but you'd have to pay for it anyway. Toaster'95 would weigh 15,000 pounds (hence requiring a reinforced steel countertop), draw enough electricity to power a small city, take up 95% of the space in your kitchen, would claim to be the first toaster that lets you control how light or dark you wanted your toast to be, and would secretly interrogate your other appliances to find out who made them. Everyone would hate Microsoft toasters, but nonetheless would buy them since most of the good bread only works with their toasters.

if you HAVE your activation / CD code, then you don't need to buy another windows install.

Just find any torrent of Win2k, and when it asks for you to enter your code, just put the good one (non pirated one) you have on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop in instead of the pirated one that came with the torrent.

Not all serial/activation numbers work with all versions of a Windows release. They aren't so generic to each other.

That said, it is worth a shot - you may get lucky. A laptop would come with an OEM CD, which wouldn't be an average, off-the-shelf Windows version. So, the numbers on the bottom of the laptop may not work with a non-OEM version.
