okay, i just adopted a cat off someone who's leaving korea. he's very friendly and constantly wants attention. i think it's great!

i have a question, though. i had cats growing up, but this cat is doing something i've never seen before.

he licks me. like a dog. i'll pet him for a while, then he gives me licks. occasionally the licks are punctuated by little nibbles. not bites -- i don't know how to describe them except as nibbles. they don't hurt in the least, but it just strikes me as strange. it kinda reminds me of what mother dogs do to their puppies.

so: does anyone else's cat do this? what is he doing?

I've had other cats like that before. Generally it happens with ones that have been removed from their mothers and weaned to early.

Funny story, I had two cats a few years back and one of them (her name was Lilly) used to bite our toes when we were fixing coffee in the kitchen in the morning. It was her way of telling us she was hungry.

I've had cats before who lick and the cat I adopted here does the same thing as yours sometimes... I never thought it strange, I just assumed it was a way of showing affection.

One of my cats does this, the male one. The female likes to rub up against us. Affection? Display of ownership?

my dad's cat really hates coffee. she'll climb up and sit on the newspapers in the morning. then she'll get curious and sniff what's in the coffee mugs. then she gets a nasty look on her face, turns right around, and kicks her hind legs trying to bury the coffee.

Sounds like a very friendly cat. I think it's trying to clean you.

Yes, he's cleaning and grooming you. I've observed my cat doing it to another cat. The little nibbles are part of the fun.

Congrats on your new furbaby, and good on you for giving him a home.

Our NA cat George gives us nips and licks all the time. I think it's a "I love this attention--more please" thing with him.

Our Korean street cat is absolutely fascinated by fire. She puts out candles with her paw.
She more than once ogled the nice big blue flame coming out of the gas stove burner when we lived in Korea Confused
We've got an electric stove now thank god.

the cat i adopted here in korea last year is the same...he licks, and nibbles...sometimes downright bites. who knows why. for the most part, it just feels like a big love fest to me. he breaks out in purrs and licks and head butts whenever i walk in the door. it's a great hello.
