I love Sympathy. It's a tragic tale of nihilistic doom, and a classic. But Oldboy is better directed, acted, paced, and has a score so sublime that I still regularly listen to it 3 years after the film's release.
My vote is for Oldboy; yes, the story is farfetched in comparison to the gritty, somewhat believable plot of Sympathy, but still I consider it the better film.

I voted OldBoy.
I saw the movie 4 times, and every single time i was impressed, it just doesn't get boring.
There is just so much strength in that movie, i loved and dragged al my friends with their hairs to see it.
I was still in Belgium, and the only cinema playing it was the gritty alternative one, you could fit 20 people in there. Man, that was great. We basicly occupeid the entire space.
Some people grossed out, some found it great, others hilarious, it is a movie that doesn't leave you with a sugary taste.
That said
Lady Vengeance is a more riper movie, it is an excellent way of showing how people feel guilty about what they did. We just had our baby boy when we saw it. We were feeling quit emotional about it. |

both superb films, almost nothing to chose between them. I went to an interview session with Park Chan Wook in London, a very interesting individual indeed.
Back to the thread question I would say Oldboy as I found it gripping from start to finish and has some really well shot scenes (incidentally i thought the post production for Oldyboy much better than vengeance). Vengeance is excellent i thought it was poorly edited in some places but Bae Doo Na is superb Song Kang Ho as well. Oldboy actually comes from a Japanese comic originally
First time poster by the way, how do you all do? |

You do realize there is a Mr. Vengeance, I hope. And if you think Lady Vengeance is superior to the aforementioned, well, I'm at a loss for words.

i would tend to agree. i didnt think lady vengeance was all there and that final interrogation scene with the parents was really laborious.
that said lady vengeance is still worth seeing but easily the most inferior of the revenge trilogy.

old boy, unquestionably... 친절한금자씨/lady vengeance is well made and 이영애 magnificent, but to me it just comes across as an ultimately hollow piece of work. also i was really disappointed with 최민식 in that film, especially when he is usually so great (ie. failan, which is almost perfect) |

I was asking why Lady Vengence wasn't included as an option, but I guess Sparks gave me the answer.
I am aware of Mr Vengence, but wasn't able to watch the whole thing - too tedious, and really same can be said for Oldboy- I don't understand people's infatuation with this movie.

Again to clarify, we're talking Mr. Vengeance (복수는나의것), not Lady (친절한금자씨), against Oldboy.

The 6 of you are idiots. (Right now it is 6 to 1)
Especially you Tibby. Moron.
That's all I have time for right now. Deconstructions of my views, as outlined so far, are welcome. |

I like the utilization of the word "idiot". Salient, yet pithy. However, then using "moron" runs the risk of repetition-by-thesaurus, thus weakening your overall thesis. |

They've got a lot in common themewise, so it's difficult to choose. I think Oldboy is the better movie for your standard movie watcher, but Mr. Vengeance has that gritty, unpolished and somewhat caricatured feel to it that makes it totally unbelievable, and yet at the same time I was enthralled. It just has so many eccentric characters. |
