Statistics Canada reports on the country's population could be delayed because thousands of Albertans still haven't filled out their census forms.
Statistics Canada usually collects the information it needs by mid-July, but this year, census staff expect to be working through August, knocking on the doors of 86,000 tardy Albertans.
The agency said it's costing millions of dollars to track down those households that missed the May 16 deadline, including the cost of bringing in workers from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
Overdue forms from Albertans could also delay some of the reports the agency publishes.
"The first counts that come out are the population counts and dwelling counts and that's scheduled for February. If we go much later than the end of August, then I think that publish release date is in jeopardy," Jerry Page, a spokesman for Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
The census determines Canada's population, tracks labour market activity, immigration and migration among the provinces. It also helps determine how much money provinces get from the federal government for health care, education and social services.
