I know I know....."Search button" right? I tried it and zippo. I am looking for anything other than TKD and Judo in the PNU area. I always hear them training on the 3rd or 4th floor of these buidings, but does anyone know of a school that caters to foreigners?
I would actually prefer a Chinese martial art but have only found a few that do not like foreigners enrolling. |

Howdy,
As I love martial arts, I always try to answer questions about them.
I don't know where PNU is. So I can't really help you out there.
As far as a school that caters to foreigners, that might be a bit of a tell order to fill. There are a few ads that run daily in the Korea Herald that you could look into, however they are probably not close to where you are.
The martial arts that are easiest to come by in Korea are...
Taekwondo, Kumdo(Gumdo), Judo(Yudo), Hapkido, and Kickboxing.
As far as not liking foreigners enrolling, that's a new one to me. I've been to 7 different gyms in 3 years and have always been very welcomed. None of the teachers or students, except for 1 place, could speak English at all.
Sometimes I run into some small problems asking questions about certian techinques, but in general the old "boy ya ju seyo" (show me, please) is all you need to know to communicate.
Sorry I couldn't help more. Anyways, I suggest giving Hapkido of Kumdo a try and not worrying about being a foreigner. Just get a Korean speaking friend to help get you signed up and figure out what times classes are at, then just show up and do it. |

If you mean Pusan National Uni, I'm sure that's where noneother than Olympic gold medallist in TKD, Moon Dae Sung, now has a chair professor status there. Wonder if he actually teaches? I was supposed to have a meeting with him back in the spring, but missed my chance after a foot injury prevented me from being able to walk to the meeting place, alas.
At many universities, they offer a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs and often have their own sports departments, too. Some include Chinese based martial arts.
I can't imagine any clubs here rejecting foreigners. It's often hard to break into an established circle if you train in martial arts gyms here, especially if you don't speak Korean, but if you are prepared to train hard, I don't see why you couldn't do well.
Perhaps you can put up a notice at PNU for training partners. Also, put a notice on www.pusanweb.com |
