So I bought it today, new on ebay, for $40 (includes shipping to Korea). With my new rig, I can't wait to see it run. From what I hear from you guys (and what I have been reading), it doesn't look bad at all. |

Best RPG I've ever played.
One of the bragging criteria on the gamer scene these days is how many FPS (frames per second) your rig can get while playing Oblivion. It is a monster of a game. It seems to be the ultimate challenge for any system. At the moment.
Cuban.....I hope you will wait for that new rig you're building before you try Oblivion.
On the other hand, it can be played, and be entertaining, on low settings.
As I have said before, I thought my latest upgrade would handle anything going today....but....Oblivion seems to sneer at my rig and demand more.
My spec:
Intel 3.0 D dual core
Asus P5LD2 deluxe
7900GT
Seagate 250GB
1 GB Samsung DDR2 5300
I still only get 20-30 fps in the outside scenes and 40-60 in the city and underground scenes. |

I'm playing Oblivion with anti-aliasing on and medium resolution with an Nvidia 6600gt video card and it runs just fine.
Just watch out if you have a significant other as this game will seriously make them loathe the time that you are on the computer playing (trust me, it'll be a lot). |

I set my SO up with her own rig, she's an online go-stop junkie, we'd kill each other if we had to share 1 computer between us.
She's heading to Korea for 5 weeks, and guess which game I'm buying after dropping her off at the airport?
A: none, I'm going to a strip club!
(just kidding, the answer is Oblivion, of course). |

If I remember correctly, didn't you say you had problems running the game with your new 7900GT? Seriously, something has to be hindering the overall performance. You have a pretty good set up there. |

Could very well be game programming, maybe something that hopefully would be taken care of in a patch? But Oblivion has the reputation as the mother of all pc games in terms of system requirements, so it's not just eamo. |

I meant to comment on the issue of glitches. There are a few that even include the inability to complete a few quests. Patch your game before you have too many game saves on your hands that it makes it futile to do so.
Also, there is a patch that allows you to use a key ring in your inventory. I seriously recommend applying that one since the keys really build up. |

I have also heard that there are tons of cool mods and tweaks that people have made which can vastly improve on the developer's original concept.
#1: BTmod
One of the first and still the best. The author states in his description that this mod "improve many aspects of the stock Oblivion UI". Understatement! This is the essential mod you need to fix up stock Oblivion's poor menu system and interface. Also check the screenshots of the mod in action: updated journal, larger inventory screen, cleaned up main interface.
#2: Natural Environments
Users of the mod all agree: this mod is worth a 10 Using textures and some ESP file tweaks, and at only 9.3 MB, this file will give your Oblivion experience an enormous overhaul. All you can do is gaze at the quality of this mod: screenshot 1, 2.
#3: Elven Cartographers - Map & Icons
Bored with the Oblivion map? This is an extensive retexture mod, fixing map and map icons. It's also compatible with the excellent BTmod - no reason to not use both of these mods! Before and after the mod is applied: what a difference
etc.

Does anyone know if mods affect the ability to use existing saved games? I'm almost done the main storyline quests, but would love to use some of the mods that are out there (I didn't think of modding before I started playing), but I don't want to lose my game progress. |

I had a pretty mixed reaction to Oblivion.
On the one hand, I didn't have any issues running the game itself on my rig (Asus EN6600, Athlon 2800+, 1 gig RAM), but the style of the game has made some big changes from the earlier Elder Scrolls.
Two of the biggest changes are the use of fast travel and horses. In earlier ES games, you had neither, and would have to sit there at the machine going from town to town. If you think it's a pain, you're right (and not alone). However, I think this played an important part in the game itself, as it combined with the enormous environment to really make you feel like you were part of the world. Since it was such an ordeal getting from town to town (maybe "ordeal" is too strong a word, but definitely a pain), you would stick around and get to know the place fairly well and run a ton of quests before moving on. The quests themselves reflected this, and usually were fairly close to the town. With the horses and fast travel, though, the game feel has changed a lot. Now it's easy to jump from place to place, and I often find myself running all over the frickin' place for quests. Earlier games had mass-transit types of things that would charge you a bit from city to city, but this is way too easy. Maybe just offering you a horse without the fast travel would have been a nice compromise. Not the end of the world, really, but it definitely took away one of the more distinctive parts of the franchise.
The other big problem is the leveling system. It used to be that you were dumped in this big world with all variety of monsters around. You could usually glance at them and get a pretty good idea of how tough they were. More fun, though (at least for me) was the fact that they (like the difficulty in getting from place to place) really made the game feel like it's own world. When you went into a dungeon, you were damned sure to be careful, because you might be walking into something way over your head. It made for a really immersing environment. The new game tossed that all out--now you can go just about anywhere and have very little chance of being so thoroughly outclassed. I know it seems strange that I'm complaining about the fact that I don't have to run screaming from a dungeon anymore, but I do miss it.
(Yes, yes, I know--there are mods to get rid of the leveling.) |

Here's a 4,500USD Cyberpower Ultimate Quad SLI (and a few other PC's/GPU's) and how it measured up against Oblivion.
That's four 7900GT's in there!!
As you can see, not too well. FPS is stuck firmly between 20 and 40. I can't imagine what kind of machine could get what gamers really like, 60fps and above.
