Has anyone ever heard of employmnet insurance, or unemployment insurance being charged to teachers?
I have just started paying into the pension plan and so alot of changes are happening on my paystub, here's the break down:
on a salary of 2,000,000
1,900,000 monthly salary
+ 100,000 meal allowance (obviously some kind of accounting fraud)
- 83,700 pension
- 40,990 health insurance
- 24,470 tax
- 2,440 resident tax
- 9,000 Unemployment insurance (has anyone ever heard of this)
When I arrived they were only taking/stealing 64,000 tax + 6400 resident tax.
Are they still trying to screw with me even though I have done all the research that told them, that, yes, I do need health insurance and national insurance is mandatory. And 64,000 is way too much for tax deductions.
Now this 9000. It isn't alot, but over a year, or two, and the point is, it's my money!
Anyone know anything else? |

Your pension, health, and income taxes all look about right. The unemployment tax is a new one. We were recently informed at our hogwan, by some government office, that teachers should pay half of this tax, although the wonjangnim is still checking into it. Right now, only the hogwan pays.
But, what is the meal allowance? Is that in your contract? Do they feed you and make you pay? |

Meal allowance is actually paid to me. In the OP there is a + beside the 100,000. They do not feed us. They make it seem that we get less pay for tax purposes I assume.
Our contract says 2 million, but they break it down as 1.9 million salary, and 100,000 meal allowance.
So I am taxed on 1.9million not 2 million. |

For foreign teachers, whose visa is tied to their continued employment (unless you happen to be on an F visa), this insurance is next to useless.
If you are fired or the hagwon goes under, your visa is effectively terminated and you are required to leave the country. How could you ever qualify to recieve any benefit if this is the case.
To the best of my knowledge, this is not paid by foreign workers and it is not required from foreign workers. I may be wrong and if someone can find a link proving that, then great. Otherwise, you're getting screwed.

lets see
meal allowance? do you get great meals at the school? IF not demand a refund.
pension should be 90,000 won per month
Health insurance should be 44,000 won per month
tax is 28,950(including resident tax
unemployment insurance is totally optional for E2 visa holders...you are not required to pay it at all! |

This is the first I've heard of a place actually deducting the amounts, too. However, make sure that your workplace does your taxes and does them correctly as I'm pretty sure these can be used as deductions and you'll get a greater return.

Make sure that you check and double-check that you are in fact registered with both pension and health...also, check through the remainder of your contract year to ensure that your employer is contributing what's necessary. |

I know that I do have health insurance, I have a card or wallet or whatever they call it.
Pension I will follow up on. This is the first month for deduction.
Meal Allowance is something sneaky on their part.
It is paid to me, notice the + 100,000.
That is why my pension, taxes and health are a bit lower.
they claim my monthly salary as 1.9 million. Plus meal allowance= 2million
so I am only taxed on 1.9 million. |

Sounds like they're being nice with the MA bit then. I wouldn't rock the boat for 10 bucks. I wouldn't even spit in the water. What would all those deductions come to if the salary was a straight 2 mil? I'm sure they're also saving money on this little deal. Who cares really though? |

Yeah, the meal allowance is just a way for them to claim your salary as only 1.9 and it costs them less in taxes. The meal allowance is just a loophole they are exploiting. |
