Ayutayya is OK; but heavily touristed and the locals are less than friendly because of that fact. I think Sukothai is much better. For waterfalls (and lakes and mountains) Kanchanaburi is a great place to go. Neither of these places are too far from Bangkok. Sukothai is about 7 hour bus and Kanchanaburi is about 4 hours from Bangkok. You could have 2 nights in Bangkok; 2 in Sukothai; then 2 in Kanchanaburi. Add the extra nights where you like the most.
I was at the beach in Samui last week. I haven't seen so many Farangs (westerners) for a long time. Thousands; millions of them (us). I think skipping the beaches and seeing Sukothai (Temples) and Kanchanaburi (Waterfalls and lakes) would be a much better trip.

Kanchanaburi is really a lovely place. I never knew where that bridge over the river Kwai was until I saw it there.
A lot of islands are nice, too.
Hua Hin is a somewhat popular tourist spot about 2-3 hours south of BKK. It was pretty nice for a smaller town, and cheaper than BKK.
Maybe www.ajarn.com can be of some assistance?
One thing about Thailand is that there are no really big cities outside BKK, which has over 6 million people. The next highest population is under half a million.

I think you can do bangkok in about 2 or 3 days, unless you are really, really into temples and touristy stuff. I haven't been tehre, but i've had some friends that really loved Chaing Mai. Its a bit far from Bangkok, but you can fly pretty cheaply with bangkok airways http://www.bangkokair.com/ or take the night train, which is also supposed to be fun. |

Get an overnight sleeeper train to chaing mai, saves a night accomm & is quite cool fun, book into royal star hotel (600b w/ pool , good food, cold brews) then get thee to any travel agent in town, get a mini-bus to Pai, (they will pick you up) a lovely little mountain enclave in the NWest (6hrs) mtn biking, walks, hotsprings, waterfalls, bit of night life. Lotsa greenery and scenery. And weeed for miles if thats yr bag (hehe). |
