I've been offered a gig at Yeoju High School, which of course is not in Yeoju, but is in what sounds like Gannam when the guy on the phone says it. Yeoju is down the road in one direction and Icheon (?) the other.

I've never heard of any of these places.

If you have even been on a bus that went past any of these places, you have more information than I do. I hope you are in a mood to share.

[Why isn't this on the Job-Related board? Because I think it is of General interest that I won't be a 백수 come next Friday if I accept this job.]

From the Wiki:

Yeoju County is a county in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Together with the neighboring city of Icheon, it is known as a major center of contemporary South Korean ceramics. Other local products of note include rice, sweet potatoes, and yellow melons. The tomb of King Sejong is located in the county.

Yeoju's institutions of higher learning include Yeojoo Institute of Technology. The Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway passes through the county.
Yeoju is also home to the Regional Foreigners Commissary, the largest repository of imported food (packaged & fresh) in the Republic of Korea.

I live in Yeoju. Actually, it is a small town, located about 1 hr from Seoul. The
locals are very nice and polite. The air quality is very good. There are about 15-20 teachers in the area. We all get along very well. It's not the most exciting place in Korea, but if you are looking for a nice place to live, I would suggest Yeoju. If you have any other questions, just pm me.

It depends what you want in a place. I live in Icheon and have only been to Yeoju once to see King Sejong's tomb. It seemed pretty pleasant. However, you will not be in Yeoju and I know nothing about Gannam.

From my experience in Icheon, which I guess is similar I would say only consider it if you are happy living in a smaller place. The upside is helpful people and a place that is very easy to navigate. The downside is limited social possibilities and lack of night buses coming from Seoul.

I don't know where you have been living and what sort of contrast it will be. A lot of teachers in Icheon for example, come from very small communities in North America and think Icheon is fine. I come from a slightly larger place in my home country with more entertainment facilities, a railway station etc. and I am frankly bored.

I guess you are already in Korea so you should have some idea of what life might be like in a small Korean town. If you want somewhere green and clean it may be fine for you.

And you, Mr. Guru, are kidding, joshing and pulling my leg. It is not nice to dangle pictures like that in front of people who have been living in the back of beyond for the past year. [/quote]

Yes, and I don't touch the bench with the wet paint sign either.

These are your words. YOUR very own words, Guru. Should I locate the sewer you rightfully live in, I will see that you go down for the third time. ARG! What better way to serve Expatkind?

There is bad. There is evil. There is vicious. Then there is viscous, as some here like to spell it. You are the latter.
