As far as hakwan jobs can be good. My bosses are very nice and very honest. They have MA degrees from the US. They are physically and mentally beautiful. They listen to my suggestions. They are considerate. They care about the students. They listen to my suggestions and take advantage of them when they are worthy. When they are not, they call me on it. They compliment me when I do well, and they are considerate when I am not doing well. Congratulations to them.

My compliments in this area usually come back to haunt me. However, its been six months and there has been no funny business. The biggest screw up there has been me. I am not worthy. |

There are no good hakwons. If you are only teaching 4 or 5 classes a day, if you get 3 weeks paid vacation (minimum), if you don't work splits, if you make at least 2.5 million a month...then you MAY have a decent job.
Hakwons have nothing to do with education, they are a business, and they seek the cheapest warm bodies to fill their holes. Nough said. |

These sentences sound like they're written by a Korean. |

Catchphrases
"If you're gonna spew, spew into this."
"Party on, Wayne." "Party on, Garth."
"Excellent!"
"Schwing!" (an onomatopoeic representation of a male achieving an erection)
"We're not worthy!" (repeated, while bowing, to guests who the two deem themselves unworthy to interview)
"...NOT!"
"Shyeah, right."
"No Way." "Way."
"Fished in!"
"I think I'm gonna hurl!" (Garth, when he gets over-excited)
"Wayne's World, Wayne's World, party time, excellent!"
"Ex-squeeze me? A-baking powder?" (Instead of, "Excuse me, I beg your pardon?")
"Yeah, and monkeys might fly out of my butt." (A response to a doubtful scenario)
"Are you mental?"
"Hello!"
"Game on!"
(Kim Basinger)"Garth can I be frank?" (Garth) "Sure, can I still be Garth?"
"If you book them.. they will come" (Jim Morrison in Wayne's dream)

How many people have a job like that? That sounds like a rarity to me. |

I actually have a pretty decent hagwon job as well. I have been there less than a month but it's highly, highly recommended by three foreign friends who've worked there and the Koreans at the place have been around for years.
2.2 mill. 2 weeks vacation. By contract 2:30-8:30 but only doing 2:30-6:30 right now. Nice apartment. Air Con. Nice bosses, honest, let you teach. Not picky about little things. No video cameras. Minimal paperwork. No problems with getting paid late, bonuses, etc.
Overall, pretty decent and I could see renewing there for sure. Of course, it's early still. |

I have a hackwon job I like. So far the boss has purchased me a new washing machine for my apartment the same day we found my old one broken when I moved in. The apartment did not have an air conditioner, but we sat down and worked it out even if it was not part of my contract. So far my relationship with my boss has been very solid, and I have no complaints. Turned out to be more teaching hours than I was led to believe, but my fellow foriegn teacher informed me that it is on average 24 to 28 a week and varies from month to month.
My first hackwon job was very nice. My boss for GnB was helpful and considerate. She took care of me pretty well and paid me everything I was owed on time.
Two things come to mind when people start grousing about their schools.
1) What is the quality of the employee-employer relationship?
2) How hard is the teacher working to teach his and her classes?
All the contracts in the world will not save a pale face from a spiteful school owner. It pays to develop a good working relationship with your boss. I mean what the hell if you have to do a little extra now and again go ahead and do it. It won't hurt you in the slightest. Certainly I would draw the line early on in the game and not allow myself to be taken advantage of. |

For some reason the sentence, 'I have a good hakwon job' just looks so wrong....Like there should be a 'but don't you have any ambition?' harping and nudging, shrilly in the background as a kind of accompaniment. Thrown in with the anguished screams of some kid throwing a temper tantrum post pencil stab (Alert! Pencil stabbing in classroom Harvard....! Suspect is carrying a loaded pencil case and proceeding out the window on the emergency escape rope....). |
