I have searched the forum but I can't find a specific answer to my question. I want to buy a laptop here and bring it with me to Korea. Besides internet use, I plan to use it to download TV shows and movies from the US and to play a few games. How much memory will I need and are there any other features I will need on a laptop for those specific uses? Also, can I somehow get an upgrade or an accessory to add Korean characters later on? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions. My 8 year old cousin knows more about computers than I do. Embarassed

Probably 1 GB of memory (minimum 512MB, but it depends on what games you want to play) and you may need a DVD burner for your movies. Once the hard drive gets full, you will need to copy your files to a DVD or perhaps an external USB hard drive. Look for a laptop with an actual graphics card, not an onboard video solution that shares system RAM. Those particular laptops don't play games so well. Modern games, anyhow.

As for Korean, you can add Korean language files (for input and reading) anytime, but your keyboard probably doesn't have the Hangul characters on the keys. That will be tough. Buy an external keyboard when you get here...they are really cheap.

If you have a reasonably good CPU and at least 512MB memory, a good size hard drive and preferably a separate graphics card if you want to play games, your machine should hum along.

Yeah...why didn't I think of all that?

Just make sure that it's really really small. People always buy big laptops, get sick of carrying them around, and leave it on their desk as a virtual desktop.

I'd say the days of 512mb being enough are coming to an end though. After running a laptop on 512mb for almost 3 years, I can tell you that there is a huge difference between a system with 512mb and 1gb. With 1gb, you can burn a cd without getting buffer underrun errors, watch DVD without ever getting choppiness, load more programs into your memory, and actually be able to do a little multitasking (it's hard to do that when running a simple AV/firewall and browser, overtax your system with only 512mb of memory).
