The nation's export productivity has moved up four notches to 14th among 67 countries.

Researcher at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade Lee Sang-ho issued a report on the nations export productivity.

According to the report based on trade figures and economic indicators for 2003, domestic companies have successfully improved their competitiveness since the mid-1990s by moving into high-tech, value-added production areas.

Lee said that the report was compiled by analyzing and adding up such data as total export volume, level of productivity, and profits generated by overseas sales.

As a result, South Korea received 17-thousand-six points in terms of export productivity this year, from 18th in 1994.

By country, Ireland ranked first with 21-thousand-825 export productivity points, followed by Switzerland and Iceland. Japan ranked fourth and the U.S. came in eighth place.

The researcher said that the nation's export productivity remains high in the rankings but growth is slow and thus domestic firms should seek a systematic change towards export items with higher productivity.

Interesting . . . The Korea Herald (or maybe it was the Times) just two or three months ago had a large article on how Korea's productive competiveness had shrunk over that same period. It was complete with a chart showing the decline relative to other nations, with the U.S. competiveness as the benchmark reference.

I've learned to take any statistics in Korean media with a grain of salt. The authors seem to shape into whatever story they want, or have been told, to write.
