Had to be on the subway when one of what I call the "subway people" (people who seem to live on the subway) barked "AJUMMA!" at me and pushed me away when I tried to sit down in the empty seat next to him. I just rolled my eyes and stood there. Amazingly, a high-school girl standing over him chewed him out a bit, and then he invited me to sit there. I shouldn't have....

As I was sitting there, he kept trying to touch my arm hair. I should have just left, but I was tired and stubborn, so I just shooed his hands away and turned my head to ignore him. That's when I felt a strange scratching on my leg (I was wearing shorts). I turned to see him shaving my leg hair off with a disposable razor! I don't know if my eyes were wider or the peoples on the other side of the subway car were wider!

I got up and left.

I was almost taken from the airport to the wrong city on my second contract. When I arrived at the airport I saw my name taped to the railing so went up and introduced myself to the guy and he grabbed my bags and proceeded to the car park.

The 'funny' part:
My previous contract had been a terrible experience in Inchon with a Mr. Park as the ogre/owner.
After pulling out of the parking lot the driver starts heading towards Inchon.
"Aren't we heading in the wrong direction?" I ask.
"No. This is the best way to Inchon. Mr. Park is waiting to meet us."
WHAT THE F*CK?!?!
Paranoia suddenly gripped me-
Had my old boss found out I was coming back to Korea and somehow pulled strings to get me back there?!?
"But I thought the school was in Kangnam?" I replied.
"School? What school?"

It turned out he was waiting for an engineer who just happened to have the same last name as my first name, and it was just a coincidence he had been standing behind the sign with my name at the airport.

30 minutes later, I'm back at the arrivals gate and sure enough some other guy is standing next to my name.
In hindsight I should've tried bluffing my way through being an engineer for a few days...

That is a funny story, Derrek, but the guy was probably saying "HA JI MA!" or "Don't do it!" 'Subway people', that's a good one. Almost all of my bad experiences have been on subways.

That would have been hilarious. It would be like one of those mildly funny hollywood comedies where you just kind of nod your head and ask your underlings "Well...what would you do in this situation...? That sounds good....make it so."

Exactly! Leo DiCaprio, eat your heart out! From what I heard from foreign engineers working on the airport, it wouldn't have been hard to do (apparently their 'suggestions' were often ignored). The stories were so scary I pretty much crapped my pants going into the new one the first time- I was sure it was going to collapse on my head!

It's even more likely he was saying "anjji ma!" or "don't sit down!"

Thanks Bulsajo, and also Dogbert...

Those are my new Korean phrases to learn for the day!

And to the guy who wanted to pretend to be an Engineer... you should have faked it and begged for an advance to buy some apartment furnishings... or at least waited for your first paycheck! AHHAHAAHAHAH!

Another brief one:

I was riding on a crowded bus one day. There was one seat left. At the next stop this old guy got on and went to sit down in the free seat. Just then an older ajumma jumped on, looked and whipped her purse halfway down the bus, past the old guy and right into the seat. She wobbled down the aisle past the old geezer who was befuddled and sat down. Everyone cracked up, except for the old guy was kind of angry....I got up and gave him my seat.

Funnier would be the face of the real engineer as he gets thrown in front 20 kindergarten kids. "Teach! Teach them!"

Not so funny, but one of the best experiences I've had in Korea was while teaching at a winter camp a few years ago. There was such a great mix of teachers there and we were way out in the boonies. There was one "hof" we would go to and one night over many pitchers and lots of smokes, about 6 of us had the best conversation that went until the wee hours. It got to the point where none of us wanted to leave to go the the bathroom and miss out on any of it. Made life long friends in that month.

I've taught alot of adults and had some good laughs...

-was 30 min late for an 11:30 company class and the guys just laughed because I was really hungover. Ended up telling drinking stories for the remainder of the class

- playing stupid and making a really uptight guy explain to me exactly why the wedding night is SO important in Korea

- practicing pronunciaion--Sh*t vs sheep, and b*tch vs beach, over and over

I should have more after 5 years here but just can't think anymore...

One time very late at night there was a girl passed out in the middle of a street half undressed. I called the police and got someone to speak English. After I explained the policeman said "so? what is the problem?"
