I don't like it.
The name, that is. I'm sure MS spent more than most of us will ever see to poll and sample, test and guage emotional responses, etc..., but they didn't ask us.
Quite the oversight, considering a good number of people here will spend a lot of their valuable time and energy downloading, cracking and circumventing its anti-piracy protections.
Now....
Let's choose a name for this beast.
"Vista". Meh....too Spain. I see beaches, blue skies, colorful yachts....nothing to do with the product.
My suggestion....
Yep. The truth be told, I think it just works. Unnerving, forceful, intrusive, threatening...pretty much sums up what I think this next offering will be.
Too heavy? Ok...
Windows CE.
Compliance Edition.
Anyone else have a better name? |

just typing that and the time was a feat worthy of a gold medal. I was dealing with a whiney 4 year old, and feeding a 6 month old as well as typing. |

did some basic image editing but photobucket isn't working now so I'm trying out imageshack - if it doesn't work I'll upload again later.

Although it is still in Beta version, Microsoft released for its up-coming next-generation OS Windows Vista some critical patches.
Microsoft acknowledged that Vista is subject to some security breaches which affect Internet Explorer 7 and the Windows kernel, as detailed in Microsoft Security Bulletins MS06-042 and MS06-051.
Security patches are not normally issued for beta software, because no one is supposed to be using it in a critical environment. Vista, however, will be "the first major Microsoft product release that will be serviced with security updates throughout the beta process,"
Vista Product Manager Alex Heaton detailed in his blog.
"We are committed to release Windows Vista updates for all MSRC (Microsoft Security Response Center) critical class issues that may arise during the beta-testing period," wrote Heaton.
Vista is not affected by the most scrutinized vulnerability in this months patches, a Windows Server service flaw that is already being exploited by some hackers.
The issue that has made a lot of eyebrows raise is that while Microsoft has touted Windows Vista as its most secure client operating system yet, the unfinished product is already getting regular security fixes.
Microsoft is setting a bad precedent by agreeing to these security updates, because it muddies the difference between supported products and those in beta test, said Russ Cooper, a senior information security analyst at Cybertrust.
He believes that Microsoft is "dead wrong to commit to providing patches of any kind for Vista beta testers, in any forum other than official beta tester channels," he said.
The updates do provide Microsoft with one benefit, however, Cooper said. They pre-empt reports on security flaws in Microsofts beta software like those issued by Symantec over the past weeks. "Theyre avoiding more of that stupid Symantec publicity that says that Vista has security holes," he said. |

Windows Vista has critical bugs
By Stan Beer
Friday, 18 August 2006
Windows users who had hoped that the Vista operating system will consign Patch Tuesday to the annals of history can think again. Microsoft has confirmed through one of its blogs that two of the seven critical Windows patches released last week also apply to Vista.
Vista is clear of the most serious flaw discovered, MS06-40, which raised the ire of the Department of Homeland Security. However, the two flaws which affect Vista are still in the critical class, which means that a remote attacker can gain control of a computer without the user having to initiate any action.
The two vulnerabilities which affect Vista are addressed by Microsoft security updates MS06-042, which plugs a hole in Internet Explorer, and MS06-051 which patches a vulnerability in the Windows Vista kernel itself.
Needless to say, intending Windows Vista users will not be happy to hear that after all the work Microsoft has put into addressing the substantial security issues faced in versions to date, the best it come up with for its operating system of the future is two critical bugs that need to be fixed in a single month.
To be sure, the fact that just two critical bugs need to be patched instead of the seven for the current version of Windows is a substantial improvement. However, the revelation that patches are needed for Vista this month makes a mockery of the suggestion by a Windows marketing manager a few months ago that Vista will make Patch Tuesday a thing of the past.
Another issue is the fact that the Microsoft blogger, Alex Heaton from Windows Vista Security, indicates in his blog that Microsoft had received: "multiple inquires from Windows Vista beta testers asking if their systems are affected by the security bulletins released last week." The question is, why would the beta testers need to ask - were they not automatically informed? The answer is no. As Heaton says in his blog: "Microsoft does not include information about beta products in formal security bulletins."
So for the cost of US$1.50 you too can download an operating system that has possible security vulnerabilities but don't expect Microsoft to tell you about them - find out for yourself. |
Pray tell, where do I buy this new fancy peice of crap. Oh yeah, it's been delayed for 5 years and it still doesn't work.
I can certianly understand someone not liking Mac. Afterall, I don't like Windows, so it's the same difference. But to say something that's practically non-existant is still better...? Seriously. However, I'm not going to argue about it. It's been done to death and there's no point. I just thought the articles were pleasantly ironic in light of this thread.

Well, we are all making fun of the OS, so I personally don't see the irony of a post saying the OS isn't very good. Seems pretty much in line with the idea.
As for Mac...well, do what you feel you must. I would say the best solution is to stick with XP for another year or two. It does everything I and most other people need and will continue to be supported by MS for at least a couple of years, so there really is no dire reason to switch.
My original idea, "MS Comply" was indicating that I think the OS will be an anti-piracy, Patriot-act-complying beast (a bit of a conspiracy theory? Yeah....a bit), allowing little or no anonymity for it's users and restricing certain activities they may want to take part in. In short, I think Vista will have some dark underbelly that is keeping with the prevailing anti-piracy doctrine that software companies have these days. After all, MS is only just that; a software giant who until this very day, feels it has been shafted royally by pirates and wants very much to regain total control over the rogues. Security is a big theme in Vista, but if you think it's only ours that is being considered, that's just being naive. |

Yeah...that was the idea. Sorry to have gotten off track....gotta love it when a guy hijacks his own thread. |
