The most appropriate thread was locked, so I guess this goes here.
I kid you not, I was at this TESOL graduate student conference last February:

This IS a big deal- a VERY big deal.
Karr was a pedophile who has murdered at least one child. He was also an English teacher in South Korea and still had his resume posted here.
If parents in South Korea freak out about this- well, it's only natural. They should be upset about it, (you would be, too, if you had kids).
If this leads to tougher immigration restrictions on foreign teachers, then so be it. Criminal background checks? No problem- if you have something to hide then stay home. While you are teaching overseas, you represent yourself and your nation to your students.
"Globe-hopping pedophiles" need to be executed, anyway. No crying about the death penalty- execute them. |

When I first came to Korea, over 7 years ago, I had my finger prints taken and a background check when I arrived. I was all for it. If you hire people to work with yur chldren, the least you can do is di a background check. I still think they should do it to this day. Keep those Pedo freaks out of the country.
Sorry bout all that crap. Me has been drinking soju al night. I have also found out...if you go to Jeju, you can buy booe duty free. Damn Jack Danielas..... |

| That blurb on how the ransom note for JonBenet Ramsey showed evidence of someone with an ESL teaching background.... well, I hope we all clean the Konglish out of our speech before we go home. I thought it disappeared when I get around enough native speakers, but..... maybe not. |

[i]"Karr, a father of three, was charged in 2001 with possession of child pornography in Sonoma County, Calif., ABC News reported."
That means he entered SK to teach AFTER he'd already been charged (wonder if he was bolting from the sentencing?). I first taught in SK in 2001 - no crminal record check then for me. Only in 2005 were they required, as far as I know. |

And remember, someone reading this post right now is the criminal in the room. |
I have a second court date in Sept. for not painting my house. The judge said he would give me the minimum fine if I would get everthing done by then. Between job, rain and storms I haven't got much done. Look at me. I'm a criminal. -Jeff |

There are a small minority of Englaish teachers around the world, who are escaping criminal pasts. Wherever checks are minimal, the more of these people turn up. In my experience there are a a fair few shady teachers in SE Asia especially.
The ease with which English speakers can get a decent job in a far-flung corner of the world is always going to allow a small number to get a job when back home they are wanted to 'help the police with their enquires.' |

| If Korea cracks down, not only on illegals but also sickos, I just have one thing to say. It's way past overdue. Hopefully this may lead to a more professional type of teacher coming here, and just as hopefully we don't all get tarred with the same brush. |

Both in your OP and in what you wrote above, you have this guy convicted of child pornography.
Link, please, where you found this to be the case.
Thanks. |

I don't remember where I pulled the thing on his 2001 arrest for child porn possession - but he's all over the news now - you should be able to find it on msnbc or yahoo rather easily.
Sorry - I don't always do links on front page news. |

An arrest is not automatically a conviction.
I don't find a single story, front page or elsewhere, reporting his conviction for child pornography.
I'm just curious where you came up with his "conviction" history. |

He wasn't convicted of any child pornography charges. Also at this stage it's far from certain that he had anything to do with the Jonbenet murder.
He wife says that he was with her in a different state at the time. She also said that he had a fascination with the murder.
It's seems fairly likely at this stage that the guy is just a wacko attention seeker. They'll have to wait for the DNA tests to come through, before they know anything for sure ... |
