I know a certain "someone" VERY WELL, who has been working in Korea without a Visa. She is from Canada and they have been stamping her passport everytime she has sent money home. Is this going to be a big problem when she leaves the country and then enters Canada. She is VERY freaked out about this situation and is leaving in 3 weeks. PLEASE HELP!!! What should she do? Should she "lose" her passport and try to get a new one?

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing before??

Tell her to take a ferry to the south of Japan. From there, in the port of Tanaka, she should ask for a guy named Mo. He will find her safe passage to the South Pacific. If she waits there long enough, the statute of limitations will expire and she'll be in the clear.

I've never been in Korea, but if her pasport is issued by the Canadian gov't and she was born here then she's fine. The Can gov't couldnt care less (immigration wise) about coming home. The problem will come from Canada revenue. How was she registered with them?

Her home HAS to take her in... but they also want the money they THINK is their's. As far as I know that would be "her" only problem...

Do not misplace the passport. That's about the worst idea ever. That document is the only means of running away from her problem. A passport means that the gov't has to give a shite about you/her (Im oversimplifying, and muckin up my spelling here). But, yah, she's green to run.

"Losing" a passport may raise some sort of red flag. Aren't those things worth a ton of money on the black market? Why not sell it and make some money off it. Laughing

But seriously, definitely don't "lose" the passport. Bad idea. Sounds a bit sketchy.. although asking for a guy named "Mo" for safe passage seems equally as sketchy.

I agree about losing your passport. I legitimately lost mine and it was no picnic. You have to file a report with the police and show that you have filed such a report as well as swear an oath or two and pretty much get told off by the Canadian consul. When I got out of there and someone asked me how it went, I said, "Well.... I think that CANADA hates me now." If I HAD been lying I probably would have broken down and told the truth under all the scrutiny. Also, the next passport they issue you will only last one year and if you LOSE that passport or have it stolen it is grounds for the a new passport to NEVER be issued to you again. That year with my temporary passport was scary.

"Losing" passport = worst idea ever.

Thanks for your insight. It's good to hear from someone who has actually lost their passport.

I guess the question left is: Do you think it'll be a problem at the border? b/c the bank transactions for 3 months are clearly on the passport?

Maybe I'm dumb but I don't see why your home country would care if you've made some bank transactions while staying in another country without a work visa. Sure it's an implication that you violated the visa terms of the other country, but is that Canada's business?

I agree with Billy here.

The problem might come from Korean customs if any problems do arise.

Tourist visa + money sent home might raise eyebrows. It will be a crap shoot.

Then again she (your friend) worked without a visa illegally so..she rolled the dice now its time to pay the piper if he comes calling (low odds here).
