Yes, I am becoming more and more Tolstoyian everyday (and not in the sense of becoming Christian).
For a number of years now, I've been having 1950's flashbacks. This is all so reminiscent of "reefer maddness". How about a new film, "terrorist under the bed" or something such?
Anyways, I'm just lost in all this AFN, be so damn careful about who you talk to, be vigilant, whisper, report to your local "commander" bullshit.............seems communist to me, or is that fascist, or is that just confessional????
Anyways, didn't Tolstoy write that "nobody, who hasn't been in jail, knows anything about the state?" . I really think he is bang on and that was 100 + years ago. Even more relevant today.

You're definitely onto something here DD.
Who was it who said ( i paraphrase ) "For evil ( TYRANNY ) to prevail, all that is needed is for good men to do nothing".
Speaking of Tolstoy, i read in a book a number of years ago he was heavily influenced by Ba'hai. Came across one source last year that he died a ( skeptical ) "Buddhist".

Maybe a little suspicious of their "religon" because not only is it non-muslim, they ( BAHAI )
also have their world HQ in Haifa

Yeah Tolstoy was very "prescient" , in the sense that he was very sensitive to the issue of the individual vs the State. Very American attitude or used to be.
I'm presently in France , heading to Canada soon. Just bought a copy of Hadji Murad (French) and want to reread. Tolstoy's finest (he always ranted against how trashy his first two books were, you know the two....). Great book and particularly revealing given our present climate -- who exactly is the terrorist????
Tolstoy had a very reckless youth, he learned from his life and became something wiser. This is the true path for all of us. He concluded as you said, that the STATE corrupts real human empathy and value/spirit. It was Tolstoy who years ago got me thinking of how the State promotes violence in the form of the military and especially with conscription (and let's be clear, even today it is conscription --- with such massive advertising, media plugging etc....and 1/4 of all Americans working for a minimum wage, no options...). His book - The Law of Love and the Law of violence along with his Confessions, rank as the most logical, truly revealing books of all time. He describes the terror of the State and a time that is much like today.
I don't like any organized religion. Bahai, a religion which unifies might be a better option than others. But I think with religion , the problem is not which one. The problem is HOW, how you relate to your religion. In some way Swift was correct when he stated that "the problem with the world is not that there is too much religion, but not enough" (to paraphrase). Meaning, not that we need more churches, more scrolls and bibles....we need more religion in our heart. There is a meaning there and we need to search more (as this is what religion is...a searching NOT a finding).
If I ever had to adopt a formal religion, it would undoubtably be Quakerism, the Society of Friends. Much like the original and pure thrust of Judaism, it is about learning/friendship and not hierarchy, control and dictated morality. It is about wisdom and love/kindness.....and kindness as we know, doesn't cost anyone a penny -- unlike those missle guidance systems.
But pick up a copy of Tolstoy and like Koestler or maybe Huxley, see a mind at work towards Freedom. The true meaning of civil disobediance -- while we see so much civil obedience in this world at present.....
