| I want to apply for the EPIK Scheme in summer 2007 as it looks a better and more secure package over hagwons. Can anyone tell me more about EPIK? thanks. |

It sucks, but it may be changing. For the better or worse, not sure yet and will probably be different from anything anyone here says now. But while EPIK has it's problems, your chances of getting a good job are MUCH better than a hagwon, but it's not 100%. You also have chances at many more "unofficial" holidays, which are virtually non-existant at any hagwon. |

Bah, I'm trying to make a website, leave me alone
Ok, bad things are there are a few schools not holding to the contract. These are few, but they exist and are screwing people over.
Second, it seems as if the contracts are getting worse and worse. One example is taking away the 2 hours in lieu of OT, which is now a 1 to 1 ratio. Also, some are including deposits, and some are making people go to crazy English village places or farming teachers out.
Having said that, it is a better deal, much better chances of a good job and less worries even if it isn't.
The "unofficial" holidays are...
1) School activity days, where you might have to be there or not. I took a couple days off during major events where there were no classes, though most of the time I just sit around on the internet or plan. I have yet to be asked to teach a surprise class, but I have been told (sometimes minutes before, but I don't care) that all my classes were cancelled for whatever reason.
2) During summer and winter vacation, even if you teach a camp, some schools will let you take off any days you are not teaching. SOme will only make camps in the morning and you can have the rest of the day off (both apply to me ). Depends 100% on one person, your principal.
3) You get 15 sick days. They are not that hard to use, though sometimes you should just lie. I have only used them for major purposes where I have to go to Seoul or if I am sick.
Compare that to hagwons, and while hagwons have a few benefits (smaller class size, usually less prep time, usually no co-teacher problems, etc) public schools are better.
Hope that helps. |
