Has this Cafe made it better as an ex-pat? That is, have you found many opportunities that you'd not have otherwise found? Even in simple ways, has it helped you to find things to do regularly? To meet people, etc.?
Just curious, 'cause it seems to me that this cafe could make life much better as an ex-pat. I didn't use it my first year in Korea. But, I bet it'd have made it better. |

I can't answer that one because I left Korea when it was still the old board and back then I prolly got on the internet less than 100 times in three years.
Not many people (No one that I knew) had their own computers back in the mid 90's...everything was dial up and there were maybe 3-4 internet cafes you could go to...and the wait for a computer was freaking torture. Torture I tell ya.
Back then you got all your information by experience and by networking with others, Canadian, American, South African, everyone.
It was ok....interesting to see how the site has grown now that you can post right away (new format) instead of waiting 48 hours to see your post appear.

It helped me with a lot of things like finding immigration, how to get around, where stores are that I would never of found, etc.
As for meeting people, it has helped me realize there are some of you I don't want to meet  |

So true!!!! 
It is great to be able to get help on some of the day-to-day things that present challenges when you're new in Korea. Ironically, some of the "negativity" I was exposed to on Dave's prior to arriving, did help. I was prepared for the worst and have been pleasantly surprised. I've found that the Koreans I've gotten to know "one-to-one" are often extremely generous and nice people. Now I have a better sense of which posters to ignore because of their negative "take" on everything Korean. |

I guess my situation is the opposite of Superfly's in one sense and the same in another. We're the opposite in that he only became a regular reader/contributor on Dave's once he was no longer an ex-pat, whereas I had already become the same ex-pat I'll ever be long before I stumbled onto Dave's (or the Internet, or Korea). We're the same in that he & I aren't teachers, so this place isn't a "career resource" for either of us.

Sure, once in a while. New restaurants, new shops, new products. That's helpful. Meeting new people... Well, I only got to know two members in person. Both left the country and one leapt off a highrise apartment building not long afterwards. I think if someone doesn't already have friends, which is probably the case for every newbie there ever was, then Dave's could be very useful for them.

| Of the expats in korea i have met, probably 40 % knew of daves, probably 2% actually post (guesstimating). From my perspective, no, this place is just a place to spin chit, thats about it really. |

| Being in a city with perhaps 5 ther foreigners, Dave's has been a lifeline for information. |

I remembered the old format, where we had to scroll through nested response just to find the latest replies.
It has helped me somewhat, but like all boards its a hit and miss thing. One thing I don't like is how we never really hear from Dave himself, a supposed guru. |

Yeah, he's no guru. And I should know. Seriously, I figure it's a very wise move on his part, from every angle, to separate himself from us crackpots. I don't personally buy the idea that he has no time to contribute or communicate. |

Well, it just seems to me a great place to network and that it could be used in some interesting ways (I have yet to think of them!). Of all the places on the net, this seems to get the greatest volume.
I know it's helped me to make choices; but did I return to Korea, I think I'd use it to find like-minded people and create some interesting mischief to keep me occupied. |

It did for me--after reading for several months I knew what to look out for vis a vis being seriously hosed by a school.
More than once I cut a school or two off at the pass because of what I learned here. |
