|
|
We were thinking of taking a trip to Jeju Do soon.. just wanted to know if anyone else has been?
Also, we were wondering about the cost of things - such as flight versus ferry, hotel rooms, what to do and where to go on the island. We won't be bringing a Korean with us to translate!
Any help would be appreciated. |

I recently took a company trip to Jeju. It is a great place, there are many things to doing. We had a tour programme mapped out for us. It included hiking in Halla-san, horseback riding, submarine and boat ride, and a lot of touristy sites.
The town is rather small, but they had a few shopping centers. My coworker goes often. He told me he pays about 75,000 for a roudtrip flight and 150,000 per night for a condo. |

I've visisted Jeju several times, and I lived there for a time as well.
Flights are about 150,000 Won return (it chnages a little depending on where you are flying from, and the season). The 75,000 quoted above was either for a one-way flight, or the guy gets some special corporate deal.
The ferry out of Mokpo can go for as little as 20,000 won (one way) or so for third class passage and takes 4.5 to 5 hours depending on the sea conditions. If you take the ferry, be aware that you will have to show your passport or ARC when you leave Jeju for Mokpo (but not the other way around). Why foreigners have to show ID for a deomestic trip (and Koreans do not) I don't know.
The south part of the island is considered the nicer part (vs the north, r Jeju City), but it depends what you are looking for. Jeju City has a larger foreigner population and nightlife scene, while the Seogwipo area has the nicer beaches and, perhaps, more things to do.
You can get rooms from 20,000 a night and up. Some of the divers on our last trip were raving about the 'Hiking Inn' in Seogwipo. 20,000 a night for nice rooms with free internet.
Not far from Seogwipo is Jungmun beach. It's pretty nice.
For tours, check out jejueco.com. They know their way around and can show you some neat stuff. |

Are these passenger ferries or do they take cars? |

Diver.
So, hows the diving? Are the dive shops decent? What about costs for diving?
The only place I've ever dived before is Puerto Galera in the Philippines...how does it compare?

Five Eagles - Car ferries. There are fast hydrofoils that take just passengers, but I don't have any experience with them.
Poet - I haven't been to PG, but I did a lot of diving around Boracay. Jeju is easily as colorful as anything I have seen in The PI or in Thailand, but doesn't compare in visibility. You should dive with Big Blue 33 while in Seogwipo. It is the only foreign-owned dive shop there. 064-733-1733. For more dive info, check out my site at www.scubainkorea.com.

Well, I have dived Puerto Galera and Jeju, and Jeju is nothing like PG, but it is still a wonderful place to dive. There is a nice variety of fish and coral, and the rock formations are really something. I'm heading to Jeju to dive over Chuseok, can't wait!
Oh, and I have heard that the fast-ferry crossing from Mokpo can be really rough...the two people I know who have done it were prostrated with desperate seasickness, along with most of the other passengers. Sounds nasty. The longer ferry ride is maybe about 1/2 the cost of a flight, and it takes 11 hours...good if you have the time, I guess. I always fly, more time for fun island stuff. Recommended: Udo Island trip. |

I have snorkeled all over Jeju, but haven't dived it. Snorkeling was pretty good, but not amazing. I didn't think diving would be that great. The video looks pretty good though. Maybe I should check it out. Thanks for the info. |

i really wanna go to jeju over chuesok for a diving adventure (first time diving, would like to get cert. so i can dive elsewhere/back home) now but was hoping to drive my bike down so i could see korea as well. Do you think this is a good idea or should I just try to find a flight (albeit, from what i've seen, this may be tough with stupid overbooked flights during chuesok)? Bigblue33 looks good, tried emailing them a few days ago but didn't get a response. I'll try calling them soon maybe. |

CAS,
Good luck getttng a flight for Chseok. You may have to look into taking a ferry (there are more ferres than the one from Mokpo by the way). If you can't get a hold of Big Blue 33 pm me and I'll see what I can do. Calling them is your best bet. |

They dive in the Busan aquarium to look at sharks? Those sharks are the most pathetic things I have ever seen. They would barely eat the fish that was handed to them. Nice music on the video though. It makes it seem scary.
Hopefully they have better dives than this. |

Another hero The dive isn't scary. No one ever claimed that the sharks were man-eaters. The aquarium dive is about the experience of interaction with marine life (there are more than sharks in the tank), not about some macho death-defying act. (BTW, we had no control over the edit or soundtrack of that video). For most people that do it with our club, it is their first experience with scuba. They seem to enjoy it. At least the 600+ people that have done it with us so far have anyway. The dive may not be that exciting for someone with a *beep* as big as yours though.
And yes...there are more dive opportunities available than the aquarium dive.
Anyway, the op was about diving Jeju, not about the aquarium dives. |
