For a while now I have been reading the Korean Herald and the Korean Times for about 2 years . Koreans don't like printing the truth about what they do to foriegners living in Korea. Myself I encounted , my boss hitting me 4 times called the police , so I put my co worker on to talk to them the boss threatened her with her job so she said don't come it is a misunderstanding between me and my boss . When I read the Korean websites like Daum , Naver , or yahoo.co.kr there is nothing positively said about foreign teachers in Korea , but the Korean goverment has the right to shut down English spectrum because of what was said with racist comments . What about practicing what you preach (close Englishspectrum because of racist comments) and (close the Korean websites what say racist comments about the foreigners here) I thought Korea was a country of freedom of speech .
If Koreans keep this attitude up Korea will not have enough Foriegn teachers to cope with the demand as most teachers are going to either China , Japan or Thailand to teach as they get treated like real people.
Who agrees or disagrees and why? |

I agree with you Eastwood!!! Korea already has a shortage of English teachers, and the press is doing nothing but making it worse. |

There will always be enough broke or oblivious people to come here and take these jobs and if it really came down to it they would probably just start paying more but an overall change in the attitude towards foreigners, I give them 30 years or so.
Maybe with 30 years of hagwon education they'll be able to teach themselves English because they will have learned it so well. |

Korea has become a foreign-unfriendly place to work. I have looked into the English-speaking media in Japan, China AND Thailand (a place infamous with attracting fiends) and I couldn't find much, if any, negative news directed at foreigners in general- only against an individual.
I am thinking that Koreans can't tell the difference between one person or the next, so they place everyone in the same catagory to make sure they get the right person, which is sad and slanderous.
For those that really feel bad and singled out, why don't you get together and hire a lawyer to sue the newspapers for slander, saying you feel hurt by what you read everyday in the newspaper and it is causing you stress that is interfering in your job and personal life. From what I read- Korea has some of the most serious anti-slander laws in the world. What is the stop you from suing them based on these laws? Go for it~!
I would join the group if I was in Korea right now. |

One thing some Korean publications seem to not quite understand is racism. In Canada, we would consider it racist if a writer wrote articles with certain slants towards Jews, Arabs, or Blacks. If the writer clearly had an agenda (as some Korean writers do) that was anti-Black, there would be an outcry in Canada. In Korea, the same goes for Westerners... the thought that we are "all the same" is seriously annoying and beyond rude!! I'd go as far to say... racist! Guess that's not news to anyone here though, that Korea can be extremely racist... |

That should chum the waters pretty well for the local chapter of the Cyber Alliance of Corean Apologists (CACA). |

I think a lot of you guys are wimps, though.
If my boss hit me, and I were in the precarious situation of being an English teacher that would be easy to bust; well by golly, I would purchase an afternoon ticket out of the country, beat the living crap out of my boss to the point that he couldn't talk (or tie him up and tape his mouth shut), then head on the first bus over to Incheon.
If you stay in Korea and whine about it on English language websites, well, it'll most likely be other English teachers who don't have to put up with abuse like that too often reading it, who will end up ignoring you for the most part anyway.
As far as the media goes, though, probably not much is gonna change. I never caught any hell anytime or anywhere in Korea though. |

What he said.
I've never been told I was a criminal, or any other crap. I Don't read the KH, and I never really hear anything negative about foreign teachers. Well, that's not exactly true. The old men at my last hagwon were total racists, but I just took their money and put them on ignore.
People in Korea who are racist (mostly soju drinking old men with no education) reflect poorly on Korea, not on me.
Having said that, I really like living in Korea. This place rocks regardless of the ramdon racist adjosshi, and the sometimes crap food. |

This keeps me warm at night:
Point a finger at me, and you'll find there are 4 others pointing back at you.
We need to organize and govern ourselves accordingly so we can let others who are thinking about this place as a life choice or a career move (LOL) know what it's really all about. I'm not talking about slander or libel, but a sensible forum where people deal with facts and are allowed to make decisions about whether this place is really meant for them.
Unlike the KFTRA, and the website, let's put a balanced and fair perspective out there and see what we can do to change our situations and keep others from finding themselves in some of the crap soup we've all (at one time or another) found ourselves in here in S.K. |

I don't see why it's so wrong for people to talk about their struggles and look for emotional support from others who can relate and empathize. I think people who usually- usually!- talk about this stuff generally like being in Korea but just find it hard to deal with some things sometimes. I think struggling with racisim is a good example and I don't blame the people who are trying to cope with it amid an otherwise good life here. I find it hard sometimes too, and I love my life here.
The argument that if you don't like some things about living here then just leave can be used in the same way for the people who say it: if you don't like people writing/saying these things then don't read/listen to it. I don't like either of those arguments though and I'm not saying it as something I think others should do, I'm just pointing something out.

Maybe that's just the difference between you and others who want to learn about the culture, enjoy living in Korea for most reasons, and care about their life and jobs here.

Nothing is wrong with that, it just gets tiring hearing about it from (usually) the same people over and over again. One has to wonder what it is about them that attracts trouble...and why the heck don't they do something about it?
I wouldn't tolerate a hakwon director hitting me. And none of them have ever attempted to, athough to be brutally honest I can think of two who would have probably dearly loved to. |

(1) I was under the impression that website was closed (and only temporarily) because of pictures of wet T-shirt wearing Korean girls, not because of the comments primarily.
2. Didn't you do any research before you came here? Korea has laws restricting the freedom of speech in certain areas. For example you can't go around saying how good the North is...several people have been fined and jailed for that. |

I assumed this was a Korean teacher. No offence, but definitely not a native speaker. |
