I am lookin to break my contract....giving notice, so as not to screw 'em.... and am wondering about getting back in on a torist visa... do I only need a letter of release from the school, which I take to immigr? (and who knows this process)...with that letter I should be able to get back in the next week on a tourist visa? Do I even need that release letter if I am not coming back on a new contract? Or..if I didn't get the letter, would I need to wait out the remainder of my year's visa? |

You NEED it or have to wait out your year on the visa. Get it, shoudn't be too hard if you give them notice (and maybe help them find a new teacher). I don't think you even need to get a tourist visa, just get another job lined up and do a visa run when you quit the old job. |

A letter of release has no value anymore. They changed the law a little while back. You now have to go to the immigrations office with your boss and both sign something to end your contract. If you want to start a new job after quitting your current job, then make sure you leave on good terms. Also, in this case you would get a letter of release so immigrations can start working on your new work visa while you finish up your current job. Then, when you finish, you still need your boss to go with you to immigrations. Get your visa cancelled and you have 2 weeks to go to Japan and come back with your new work visa. |

A friend of mine broke his contract by giving notice and simply leaving the country and cancelling his work visa. He didn't get a Letter of Release [LoR]. When he came back with over 4 months left on this now cancelled contract he had no trouble getting a new E-2 visa. He didn't need an LoR (but in saying this his Korean fiancee did become his new employer).
I recently got fired in the 'not paying severance' scam and have since visited Japan for a tourist visa. I haven't bothered to get an LoR and don't anticipate that I will need one as old E-2 visa details are removed from immigrations computer system.
Good luck and if you want to get out of your contract I advise you do.
